Smith W Moore m. Bridget Wisehart 1 Oct, 1844. This Bridget McClinck Wisehart was my gr-gr-grandmother through her first marriage to Oscar (Ausker) Wisehart. I don't have any info on what happened to Oscar (died or took off?) but they had 3 children, John James (my gr grandfather), Clarissa and Abigail and they lived in the Deavertown area. I would guess this is your Smith Moore. Hope this is helpful. ADDISON: The following information was taken from "Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio History, Vol. 2, pg 78: Clarence M. Addison, a leading member of the Columbus bar, young, strong and forcible, his ability enabling him to make continued progress in a direction where advancement depends entirely upon individual merit, was born in Morgan county, Ohio, November 14, 1872, and is a son of Edward and Clara (Wisehart) Addison, both of whom were natives of Ohio. The father was a blacksmith by trade. At the time of the Civil war he put aside business and personal considerations and served bravely and creditably throughout the period of hostilities. In the public schools Clarence M. Addison began his education, continuing his studies until he became a pupil in the Rendville high school. He then engaged in teaching for three years and thus being, through his own effort, financially able to enter the Ohio State University, he became a student in that institution and was graduated from the literary department in 1896 with the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. Continuing as a student there in the law department he won the Bachelor of Law degree on his graduation with the class of 1900, and the same year was admitted to practice. While preparing for the bar as a student in the state university, he also taught French and German in the Central high school for four years. He is, in the exact sense of the word, a self-made and self-educated man who, depending upon his own resources from an early age, has developed his powers and capacity to a large degree, his ability making him recognized as one of the forceful factors in professional circles and in public life. lie began the practice of his profession in connection with his two brothers, Lewis G. and Arthur E. Addison, and is now a member of the firm of Addison, Links & Babcock, one of the leading law firms of the capital, Mr. Addison easily ranking with the distinguished lawyers of the city. His material fortune, when he left the farm, consisted of his clothing and fifty cents,--money which he had himself earned. His determination and energy, however, were unlimited and they carried him into important professional relations, for the law firm of which he is now the head has today an extensive and distinctly representative clientage. The court records attest his success in the handling of many important and complex legal problems and he has made for himself the reputation of being most thorough in the preparation of his eases, while in argument he shows a keen analytical power, resulting in logical conclusions. On the 17th of June, 1901, Mr. Addison was married to Miss Gertrude Nichol, a daughter of F. H. Nichol, a prominent contractor of Columbus, and their home is brightened by the presence of two sons, Roger and Hugh. Mr. Addison is a member of the Delta Tau Delta, a college fraternity. He was secretary of the board of public works during Mayor Hinkle's administration, and served as first assistant director of law under George D. Jones. The honors and emoluments of office, however, have had little attraction for him, as he prefers to concentrate his energies upon his private practice which is continually growing in volume and importance. ======================================================= xi. NELLIE CORNELIA5 MOORE (CORNELIUS4, PHILIP3, PHILLIP2, PETER1) was born 23 Jan 1844, and died 13 Jan 1919. She married HENRY PUNEO GRAVATT Abt. 1870. He was born Jan 1842, and died 14 Sep 1905. Notes for NELLIE CORNELIA MOORE: Obituary taken from the Wayne County, OH Democrat, provided by Patricia Celia Gravatt Orli: MRS. GRAVATT DIES, AGED 75 "Mrs. Nellie Moore Gravatt, 75, widow of H.P. Gravatt, forner editor of the Wayne County Democrat, died at 6:30 o'clock Friday evening at her home, 709 Nold avenue, following an illness of a week. For the past year Mrs. Gravatt had been in fialing health due principally to heart trouble. A week ago Friday evening at supper, a small fragment of bone from some soup became lodged in her throat. Believing it would dislodge itself Mrs. Gravatt refused medical attention until the following day when it was dislodged by Dr. Alonzo Smith. The strain through which she passed resulted in her taking to her bed where she remained despite a number of rallies until her death. Mrs. Gravatt was born in Zanesville, on Feb. 23, 1834. She was a daughter of Cornelius Moore, who at the time was mayor of Zanesville, but who later moved to Cincinnati to become pastor of one of that city's lartest Methodist churches and founder of the Masonic Review whihc he conducted for 28 years. A graduate of Wesleyan Female Seminary and of the music school of the institution of Cincinnati, Mrs. Gravatt early bevcame prominent in the social and art life of that city. The singing and piano playing won for her a wide following and her accomplishments were freely given and put into service by the soldier's aid in hospitals there and in southern Ohio and northern Kentucky. So popular were her efforts along this oine that a steamboat company of Cincinnait about to launch a new Ohio river passenger steamer had it christened the "Nellie Moore" after her. The boat after a long career burned to the water's edge one night along the Indiana shore. All of the passengers and crew escaped. While actively engaged in assisting her father in conducting his business of publishing the Masonic Review and the manufacture of lodge regalia and also through her access to her father's library, reputed at that time to be the largest collection of Masonic literature in the United States, Mrs. Gravatt gained an acquaintanceship among prominent Masons that extended throughout the country. She also acquired the distinction of having a more intimate knowledge of Masonry than any woman in the country and a better knowledge of it than many members. In the early [18]70's at Cincinnati she was married to Henry P. Gravatt and soon after moved to Columbus, O., where he husband for ten years edited the Odd Fellow's Companion and where he became grand master of that order in Ohio. In 1881 Mrs. Gravatt moved to Wooster when here husband purchased the Wayne County Democrat. She has continued to make her home here ever since. Mr. Gravatt died about 13 years ago, after having sold the paper. Mrs. Gravatt was the mother of eight children, four of whom died while in Columbus, three of them within four weeks during an epidemic of scarlet fever. Four children survive her: Quintin M., of Cleveland; Mrs. Rae Allen, Joseph A., and Otto, of Detroit. During her past year or more of ill health Mrs. Gravatt was almost constantly attended by her daughter. All of her children and her five grandchildren were with her when she died. Until her health failed Mrs. Gravatt was an active member of Wayne Rebekah Lodge, Wooster chapter of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon."----- [Footnote: It was Joseph who resided in Detroit, Otto lived in Cleveland. Mrs. Rae Allen was Rachel. The year of her birth was 1844, not 1834. LOUIS G.6 ADDISON (CLARISSA MICHAEL5 WISEHART, SMITH W.4 MOORE, PHILIP3, PHILLIP2, PETER1) was born 29 Apr 1861 in Perry Co., OH. He married LIDS KINSELL 18 Sep 1901. She was born in Moscow, OH. Notes for LOUIS G. ADDISON: The following information was taken from "Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio History--Centennial History of Columbus," Vol. 2, pg 397: LOUIS G. ADDISON Louis G. Addison came from among the deep valleys and lofty summits of southeastern Ohio, where he met nature face to face and learned many of her ways. He stands today as a prominent representative of the legal fraternity in the capital city and also as a valued factor in various business enterprises, being especially well known in financial circles. He was born in Perry county, Ohio, April 29, 1861, and is a son of Edward and Clara (Wisehart) Addison, who were married at Zanesville, Ohio. Mrs. Adison, however, was born in Franklinton, district of Columbus, and was related to General Charles C. Walcutt, of this city, one of Ohio's distinguished military officers. Edward Addison served as a soldier throughout the greater part of the Civil war, including the celebrated march with Sherman to the sea. His brother-in-law, John Wisehart, was also a member of the army, while three uncles of Mrs. Charles Addison were soldiers of the Civil war, two of whom were killed in action at Stone river. The survivor of the three was an officer who, after the close of the war, resided at Chillicothe, Ohio, and attained prominence in civil life. Louis G. Addison pursued his education in the country schools of Perry, county and showed great aptitude in the assimilation of knowledge. He started out to make his own way in life when but twelve years of age, for the family numbered fourteen children and he proposed to save his father the burden of taking care of one member of the family. He sought service in various lines of business as opportunity offered and when still quite young engaged in teaching in the district schools, being accounted one of the most efficient public school teachers of his part of the state. He also sold books at different times and was steward of the college club when in the university, so that by various respectable and honest methods he paid his own way, not only providing the material things of life, but also meeting the demands of his nature for advancement in educational lines. He completed a course of philosophy in the Ohio State University in 1887 and then in preparation for the bar pursued a law course, winning hi Bachelor of Law degree in 1891. During his college days he found a friend in Judge Nash, who promised him that after he had finished a course of study in law that he should enter the Judge's office. This promise was fulfilled and his early association in the practice of law proved of the utmost value to him. He is today at the head of the well known law firm of Addison, Sinks & Babcock, taking rank with the leading law firms of the city and umbering many of the important corporations of Columbus and central Ohio among its clients. From the beginning the law practice of Mr. Addison has witnessed phenomenal growth. As a corporation lawyer he has few equals in the middle west and in this connection he represents many of the largest business concerns of the capital city. He is in love with his profession and few men possess his indomitable energy so that, as the years have passed, he has won notable success in the conduct of legitimate interests and has established himself in a prominent position at the Ohio bar. While Mr. Addison regards the practice of law as his real life work and gives to it the major part of his attention, he has yet extended his efforts into other lines and various business concerns, in which he is financially interested, have profited by his wise counsel and keen discrimination in the complexities of business life. He is a director of the Security Savings Bank, the Groveport Bank and the Reynoldsburg Bank and is also a director of the New York Coal Company, the Buckeye Transfer & Storage Company and numerous others, while of the Columbus Gas & Fuel Company, he is general counsel. On the 18th of September, 1901, Mr. Addison was married to Miss Lids Kinsell, of Moscow, Ohio, and they have one child, Frances Ruth. Mr. Addison is a man of great affability combined with that quality which, for want of a better term, has been called, magnetic personality. His social nature finds expression in his membership in the Columbus, Ohio and Columbus Country Clubs and he is also a member of the Franklin County Bar Association. His life record indicates most clearly that force of circumstances, natural ability and well developed powers can carry an individual into important relations notwithstanding the fact that early environment and lack of opportunity seem to constitute a bar to progress. He married (1) DOROTHY MAE HELRIGGLE 03 Sep 1932 in Wheeling, WV. She was born Abt. 1916. He married (2) PATRICIA SCOTT Abt. 1948 in Minneapolis, MN. Notes for DOROTHY MAE HELRIGGLE: Article taken from the Zanesville Signal of 11 Feb. 1939: COMELY EMPLOYE OF GLASS PLANT IS FIRST WOMAN IN MUSKINGUM CO. TO MAKE "SOLO" PLANE FLIGHT Likely as not, that small yellow monoplane you see flying over the city these days is operated not by a man, as you probably supposed, but by a young woman---Muskingum county's first feminine pilot. She is Dorothy Helriggle Stickel, 22, of South Zanesville, an employe of the Hazel-Atlas No. 2 plant. For more years than she can remember, Mrs. Stickel has been interested in aviation. But only recently did she become serious enough about it to take flying lessons. An apt pupil, she was quick to learn the fundamentals of airplane operation and after only eight and a quarter hours of instruction under "Professor" Bill Bullock, was ready to make her first solo flight at the local airport on Frazeysburg road. This was considered remarkable in view of the fact that the average student requires about 12 hours' tutoring before being permitted to fly alone. The comely young woman's initial flight was a abbreviated hop which consisted, more or less, of a quick takeoff and a bumpy landing. Once she shook off her nervousness, however, she climbed back into the Taylor Cub plane and soared away on another and longer flight. She wasn't frightened, she said, but she did heep her fingers crossed on that first venture just to make sure she didn't forget any of the pertinent details about bringing the ship back to earth. Mrs. Stickel, wife of J.J. Stickel, became a pupil of "Professor" Bullock last October. Her husband, also an aviation enthusist, suggested that they both enroll in the "class." They made excellent progress and recently were granted student permits by the United States Department of Commerce, the first to be issued here. The licenses which they hold permit them to fly alone, but prohibit carrying passengers. Since receiving her permit from the government, Mrs. Stickel has made several flights and now has two and a half hours' flying time to her credit. Aside from actual flying, the Stickels are interested in all sorts of literature dealing with aviation. The bookshelves in their home are lined with books and magazines on the subject. Mrs. Stickel entertains no ideas of becoming a famous flier. She looks upon aviation as a hobby and a thrilling adventure.----- [This article was also accompanied by a photo of Dorothy in front of her airplane] ==================================================== More About JEHU STICKEL and DOROTHY HELRIGGLE: Marriage: 03 Sep 1932, Wheeling, WV More About JEHU STICKEL and PATRICIA SCOTT: Marriage: Abt. 1948, Minneapolis, MN Child of JEHU STICKEL and DOROTHY HELRIGGLE is: i. Notes for MAXINE RUTH MOORE: Personal note from Charles Clayton Moore: I had not heard from my Aunt Maxine in nearly 35 years, since we moved from OH to FL when I was 13. We just lost contact with each other. I conducted a search for her name on the Internet in May of 1998 and three listings came up. One of them was her. I called her and we talked for about 30 minutes, she was very surprised! About three weeks later I received a wonderful 5-page letter from her. UPDATE: I recently found out that Aunt Maxine died in September of 2003. I was (and still am) greatly saddened at her passing. She was the last family link I had on my father's side. Most of the contents of her letter (that which I feel is pertinent) is quoted below: ============================================================== "You are quite right about my date of birth and age. I was born Feb. 14, 1910 and am now 88 yrs. Alton [Beyer], my husband, was a long time teacher of English and Literature at Dover, Ohio, and I taught piano privately and worked quite a while as a sales person in childrens' wear. We had two daughters, Lenore who died of cancer Dec 20, '88 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was born May 9, 1937. She was a violinist and had 3 sons. And Judith who lives in Steubenville Ohio and was born Feb 22, 1941. Judy has 2 sons and a grandson. "Years ago Judy, Al and I drove to Roseville, Ohio where Keith, Virginia, and I were born, just to look around and talk to whom ever we could. We took a picture of the house where we were born and found a swimming pool in the back yard. We felt kinda bad that it had been changed. There were steps going down to the back of the house which extended down with a basement kitchen and dining area. "We went to the cemetery and took pictures of the Moore family tomb stones there, and recorded dates. Our Grandfather Moore was a blacksmith and had the only pair of horse stocks in the county (to hold the foot while it was being worked on). I remember seeing the sparks fly and loved it as he got them red hot and hammered to shape the shoes. The shop is now a garage, but the owners gave me a brick from the old kiln. They also suggested we see the house. "C.W. Moore 1850-1927 (your Great Grandparents, Charles) Elizabeth Moore 1851-1928. Buried in plot #10 in Roseville Cemetery, across from their home. "I remember having "taken a trip" with Grandpa Moore from Roseville, OH to Zanesville, OH on the train to buy the stocks. It wasn't far to go but it was a big trip for this little girl. Also I had my first taste of coffee at their house (it was a bit of coffee poured over crackers at breakfast). Virginia & Keith were there, too. "I remember hearing that my brother, Keith, when I was born, went up and down the Roseville streets shouting, "I have a baby sister and her name is Magazine!" "I recall Keith and Virginia were right there doing the same things I did. We always played together & with our neighbor friends. Our precious dog, Queen, was our love and constant companion. She never seemed to tire of us. "I have been told by several people what fine and talented parents we had. Our dad was a barber and sign painter. But he did many more things. He had a very "up to date" camera. It was placed on a tripod with a black cover to put over his head when he took pictures. He was a fine camera man and had his own dark room for developing. He also painted pictures and often tinted the photographs. "Our mother crocheted lace, made our clothes. We had lace insertion and edging on our slips. We learned, as we grew up, that Dad and Mother made all of the decorations that were on our Christmas trees. Keith later told me that he had peeked into the living room on Christmas eve when our parents were decorating, and we were supposed to be sound asleep in our beds! "We moved from Roseville to Somerset [OH]--Grandma & Grandpa Stickel's home--when our mother became ill with tuberculosis. They hired a private nurse, "Miss Henthorn," to nurse and take care of sanitation to keep the children healthy and from getting the disease. Our father worked as a barber in Somerset then. Our mother, Jennie Catherine Moore, died in 1918 at age 31 (born 1887). Our father was greatly saddened at her death. I recall hearing that he said, "The sun will never shine on my face again," and as it was, with his spirit gone, he developed typhoid fever, was taken to a Zanesville hospital and also died about three months later. So sad that there were no antibiotics or any medications to treat infections then--in fact, when I grew up and Al and I were just married (1933), Al developed step throat and almost died, a very high fever. Sulfa was just being introduced and the doctor tried it on Al. The doctor later told us "If Al hadn't died of the strep infection, it's a wonder the sulfa hadn't killed him!" It was so crude then. This was about 1938 and our parents died in 1918. I tell you this to show why there were so many deaths earlier, including little children. "The death of our parents was not just a family affair. The whole town of Somerset grieved with and for us. Keith was then 10, I was 8, and Virginia 4. I've been told our parents had a 4th child--Carl--who died at birth. He was between Virginia and me. I can barely recall seeing the little casket sitting by the front door in Roseville. "We three children lived on with Grandma & Grandpa Stickel in Somerset who by this time were getting quite old. They had raised their own 7 children. Grandpa used to trot us on his knee and sing old war songs to us. He was a Civil War veteran--shot through the body and lungs and lay dying on the battle field in the battle for Missionary Ridge in Gettysburg. They passed over his body 3 times with a stretcher, on the 4th time he was able to move a bit and raised his hand. They cut the bullet out of his back right there on the battle field with nothing to dull the pain. From then on he had to sleep propped up with pillows, in a sitting position. "I never heard our grandparents say an unkind word to each other, nor use any kind of profanity. I remember we were't allowed to sing at the table or put our arms on the table when we ate. They were good in arithmetic and spelling and helped us when we asked for help, and they encouraged us to study. "I suppose because of the energy drain on our grandparents--their youngest son, Uncle Sherman and his wife Aunt Lesta, of Canton--took Keith to live with them in Canton, OH, as he did for several years. At times Virginia and I would visit there too as well as with their other children. "Later Keith seemed to get the wonder-lust and left their home when he was older. I remember clearly when Keith came driving in saying he had been in Kansas. He stayed a while and was off again. I guess there's a little of that traveling spirit in all of us. "Uncle Sherman and Aunt Lesta, daughter Vera & husband, moved to Florida in later life. He was the youngest son and the last to die on Oct 28, '88 at age 103. Viriginia visited him at the nursing home and saw that he had what he needed and wanted. "Our daughter Judy found some of these pictures of Keith among the pictures I left in her attice when we moved to a mobile home in Texas. I had a few here, too. He was a dear, sweet boy as you can see. We had great times playing together in the back yard. "Charles, your father lived a long life, after all of his war experience and shell shock. He said to me, "I can still hear those Japs picking over our trenches." "You caused me to think a lot about our childhood and I thought about it after I went to bed. "I wish you and your family the best of good fortune and health." ---Max More About MAXINE RUTH MOORE: Census: 1910 Census - Muskingum Co., OH in Roseville Notes for ALTON JESSE BEYER: The majority of the information I have on this BEYER line I obtained from Sheila Thomas, 787 Leonard Rd., N.E., Baltimore, OH 43105; PH: 740-862-6173; email <[email protected]> ==================================================================== More About ALTON BEYER and MAXINE MOORE: Marriage: 1933, New Lexington, OH Children of MAXINE MOORE and ALTON BEYER are: i.
