COLONEL CHRISTOPHER GIST of Mt. Braddock, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; b. in Maryland about 1706, and d. in 1759, of smallpox in South Carolina or Georgia. He was first a merchant in Baltimore Town, but failed in business and made an assignment to his relatives, CROMWELL and STANSBURY, in 1745. In 1750 he styled himself as late of Baltimore County but then in the Colony of Virginia and conveyed to Tobias STANSBURY the Gist Limepits in Baltimore County. He later settled on the Yadkin, in Virginia, and was undoubtedly the most famous scout and first renowned explorer of the Ohio River and Valley through the present states, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, as agent of the Ohio Company. This was in 1750; and he was associated with Gen. George WASHINGTON as Indian scout and forest ranger, being his guide and companion on the journey to Lake Erie in 1753. He was made Captain of the Rangers, organized in Virginia for the defense of frontier, and served through 1756 and until the company was discharged in 1757. He received various titles of Scout, Captain and Colonel. With his sons, Nathaniel and Thomas, he took part as guide and scout in BRADDOCK'S expedition. He served with George WASHINGTON in his victory at Great Meadows and in his disaster the next day, 4th July, 1754, at Fort Necessity, when WASHINGTON surrendered to the French, in superior numbers, but with the honors of war. At the battle of BRADDOCK'S Defeat, 9th July, 1755, he was present with his sons, and afterwards raised a Company of Scouts in Maryland and Virginia and rendered efficient service. 1st October, 1755, he was commissioned Lieutenant of the Virginia [p.240] forces and in 1756 was made Captain of a Company of Scouts. The same year he went to the Carolinas to enlist the Cherokee Indians for the English service, and as late as 1758 was Deputy Agent for Indian Affairs at Fort Frederick, Maryland; he acquired lands in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, which were inherited by his son Thomas; m. Sarah HOWARD, dau. of Joshua and Joanna (O'CARROLL) HOWARD of Baltimore County, Maryland, whose will of 1738 names his daughters, Sarah, Mary and Violetta, who had m. Col. Christopher GIST and his two brothers, Nathaniel and William respectively.

John Eager Howard was a great Army officer and leader. Born on June 4, 1752 to a wealthy Maryland planter and his wife, he was well educated and became a Captain in the 2nd Maryland Brigade in July 1776. He quickly advanced in rank. Howard was known to be calm and reserved. He never let his mild temperament interfere with his military methods. He was an outstanding infantryman and always seemed to be involved in the fiercest part of the fighting. By January 1781 he was a Lieutenant Colonel and in charge of the Continental forces under Daniel Morgan at Cowpens, South Carolina (The term cowpens was used to mean pastureland--the field was about 500 yards long and just as wide, a park-like setting dotted with trees, with no undergrowth because it was kept clear by cattle grazing).

After Cowpens, Howard fought other battles including Eutaw Springs in South Carolina. His wounds at Eutaw Springs were so severe that they ended his career, and caused him to suffer the rest of his life. He returned to Maryland, where he married Margaret "Peggy" Chew, daughter of Chief Justice Chew of Maryland, in 1787. Howard was considered to be one of the finest officers of the period.

After the Revolution, Howard continued his public service. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1788, Governor of Maryland from 1788 to 1791, and a US Senator from 1796 to 1803. He ran unsuccessfully for Vice President in 1816. The state of Maryland honored him in the song, Maryland, My Maryland. In addition there is an equestrian (meaning "on a horse") statue of him in Baltimore near a monument to George Washington on land that Howard donated to the city. In fact, today, much of the land occupied by the city of Baltimore once belonged to Howard.

John Eager Howard died at his home on October 12, 1827, and is buried at Saint Paul's Church in Baltimore. Howard County was named in his honor.

The Americans and the British met and fought at the Cow Pens, a well-known pasturing area for cattle in the upcountry of South Carolina, on January 17, 1781. Recent research reveals that Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, the American commander, probably had more soldiers than the 970 for which he could account. The British, under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, had around 1050 men. Both the Americans and the British fought in the long, straight lines which were characteristic of 18th century combat. Morgan decided to divide his men and deploy them in three main lines of infantry with his cavalry held in reserve. His first two lines of defense consisted of militia, or volunteers. Of these, he placed around 120 sharpshooters in the first line with orders to aim for the officers, get off two or three good shots, and retreat to the second line. The second line also was ordered to fire twice and retreat through the third line. His third line of defense was composed of about 300 Continentals, or paid soldiers, from Maryland and Delaware and some Virginia militia. The commander of this line was John Eager Howard.

John Eager Howard was a great Army officer and leader. Born on June 4, 1752 to a wealthy Maryland planter and his wife, he was well educated and became a Captain in the 2nd Maryland Brigade of the Flying Camp (which was a mobile, strategic reserve unit) in July 1776. He quickly advanced in rank, becoming a Major in the 4th Maryland Regiment on December 10, 1776, and a Lieutenant Colonel in the 5th Maryland Regiment on March 11, 1778. Howard was a portrait of paradoxes. Known to be placid and reserved, he never let his mild temperament interfere with his military methods. He was a superb infantryman and always seemed to be involved in the fiercest part of the fighting, ready to use his bayonet when necessary. By January 1781 he was a Lieutenant Colonel and in charge of the Continental forces under Daniel Morgan at the Cow Pens.

Morgan's strategy was to place the untrained militia in front of the Continentals with orders to get off two good shots and then retreat. Both Morgan and Howard explained to the Continentals the planned militia retreat so that they would not be alarmed. The first two lines followed orders and retreated as planned. Then after the Continentals and the British had been fighting fiercely for several minutes, Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton ordered his reserves, Fraser's 71st Highlanders, to advance toward Howard's line. Howard, realizing that his right flank was exposed to the enemy, attempted to change the front of the company on the right. He ordered his right flank, which was composed of Virginia militia, to wheel backward and to the right to face the enemy. In the noise and confusion of battle, the soldiers misunderstood Howard's order for the Virginia militia, and the entire line began an orderly retreat. Howard maintained control and, when Morgan questioned him about the retreat, he pointed out to Morgan that the line was retreating in good order was not beaten. He then followed Morgan's order and had the Continentals continue their retreat to the rising ground and face about and fire. As his men faced about, Howard reported that they remained uncommonly cool and gave the British "an unexpected and deadly fire." Taking advantage of the disorder of the British lines, Howard ordered a bayonet charge. The Americans executed a double envelopment, a classic military maneuver in which the enemy's flanks are turned, and won the battle in a little less than an hour. Morgan wrote of Howard's performance at the Battle of Cowpens: "[Howard's attack] was done with such address that the enemy fled with the utmost precipitation. We pushed our advantages so effectually, that they never had an opportunity of rallying."

After Cowpens, Howard enhanced his solid reputation for coolness and courage under fire in the South Carolina battles of Hobkirk's Hill (April 25,1781), Ninety Six (May 22 - June 19, 1781), and Eutaw Springs (September 8, 1781). His wounds at Eutaw Springs were so severe that they ended his career, and caused him to suffer the rest of his life. He returned to Maryland, where he married Margaretta "Peggy" Oswald Chew, daughter of Chief Justice Chew of Pennsylvania, in 1787. Howard's contemporaries considered him to be one of the finest officers of the period. "Light-Horse Harry" Lee wrote of him: "We have seen him at the Battle of Cowpens seize the critical moment and turn the fortune of the day; - alike conspicuous, though not alike successful, at Guilford and the Eutaws; and at all times, and all occasions eminently useful. He was justly ranked among the chosen sons of the South." General Nathanael Greene wrote, "Colonel Howard is as good an officer as the world afforded, and deserves a statue of gold, no less than the Roman or Grecian heroes." Congress honored John Eager Howard for his actions at Cowpens, not with a gold statue, but with a silver medal, which he received in 1790.

After the Revolution, Howard continued his public service as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1788, Governor of Maryland from 1788 - 1791, and as a US Senator from 1796 - 1803. He was an influential member of the Federalist Party and ran unsuccessfully as their Vice Presidential candidate in 1816. The state of Maryland honored him in the song, Maryland, My Maryland. In addition there is an equestrian statue of him in Baltimore near a monument to George Washington on land that Howard donated to the city. In fact, today, much of the land occupied by the city of Baltimore, Maryland once belonged to Howard.

John Eager Howard, a great Revolutionary War veteran and politician, died at his home on October 12, 1827, and is buried at Saint Paul's Church in Baltimore.---

Notes for ISAAC SUMMERFIELD FORD:
Biography of Isaac Summerfield FORD, take from the website at: http://www.jdroots.com/bios/ford_isaac_summerfield.html

Childhood

Isaac was probably born in Muskingum County, Ohio. I believe that is where Charles and Elizabeth lived at the time, and he also shows up on the 1850 census at age 1 in Muskingum. By 1850, the news of the gold discovery at Sutter's Mill in California had made its way east, and the westward migration began as people stormed west to find their fortunes.

I don't know anything about Isaac's childhood aside from the fact that he had about ten or eleven brothers and sisters. It has been difficult to determine the exact size of the family. There are a lot of names floating around in various genealogies. I have confirmed ten children, but there may have been more. Isaac was smack dab in the middle, being the fifth born. He would be a bit too young to leave home by the time the Civil War broke out.

Ohio wasn't exactly the frontier in the 1850's, but it wasn't far away.   Prior to the gold rush of 1849 there weren't many white folks west of the Mississippi.

Adulthood

Adulthood probably came early on the Ohio frontier of the middle nineteenth century. Childhood is largely a post World War Two invention, and since James went off to war when Isaac was about thirteen, Isaac was essentially the oldest boy in the family from a rather young age. Isaac was undoubtedly his father's right-hand man on the farm.

When Isaac was 26 he married Margaret Ann Weaver on December 30, 1875.  Margaret was the daughter of Benjamin Weaver, Jr. and Cassie Ann Curry.  Ten months later their first child, Rachel Catherine, was born. Isaac and Margaret lived near Sego, Ohio just off of what is Highway 22 today. Their house is still standing although no one is living in it. I visited the house in 1999 with Rachel's daughter, Frances Johnson.

Isaac and Margaret had their second child about one year after Rachel. David Benjamin was born on November 12, 1877. Rachel had been born in November of the preceding year. I believe Rachel and David were good friends as well as being siblings. Frances indicated as much. The two of them were the last two to get married. They stayed with Isaac and took care of him until around 1909 and 1910. David probably went by D.B. for most of his life, although he was also known as Ben. My father refers to him as Uncle Ben. My father, Benjamin Isaac, was named for D.B. and his father.

On April 7, 1879, John Wesley was born to Isaac and Margaret. His name on the birth records for Perry County is John Westly. Two years later in March of 1881, Marcellus H. Ford was born. Marcellus went by the name Maurice which was spelled as either "Maurice" or "Morris," but it was pronounced "Morris."

Isaac and Margaret had been married during a deep depression. Over speculation in land and securities after the Civil War lead to a financial panic in 1873. By the time the country had worked its way out of the depression, Isaac and Margaret had four children. Aside from depressing crop prices, the depression probably did not mean as much to farmers as it did to businessmen. The farmers of the southern Ohio coal mining district didn't have much money anyway.

This was the era of the Wild West and the great wars against the Indians.  None of it affected anyone in Ohio, but the news of Jesse James, Billy The Kid, and the Battle at Little Big Horn probably trickled back through the few newspapers that existed at the time. Isaac's oldest brother, James, had come back from the Civil War with wanderlust in his heart. He probably only stayed on the farm for a couple of months before heading west to seek his fortune. He took a job driving stage coaches in Kansas. As far as I know, James never once returned to Ohio, but it is quite clear that he kept in tough through letters.

This was also the era of the Robber Barons. In America at this time, you were either filthy rich and flaunting it or you were dirt poor. Many Americans were developing negative attitudes toward the corporations. It was into this climate that my grandfather was born. On December 1, 1883, Margaret gave birth to twins. One of the twins was either stillborn or died very shortly after birth and probably was never named. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery, a small deserted cemetery near the house. The other twin was my grandfather, Charles Cleveland Ford. It is obvious that his first name came from his grandfather, Charles, Jr., but I have no idea where the name Cleveland came from.

Two years later in 1885, Isaac and Margaret had their sixth and final child, James Franklin, from whom I derived my middle name of Franklin.

Before most of the kids were into their teens, Margaret died on September 17, 1890. Her death record does not list a cause of death. Death records prior to 1900 did not usually contain much information. In those days people died from what are relatively minor infections today. At some point, Isaac remarried although I have no idea when. He probably married Amelia Jane Huston during the 1890's because he needed help with the kids.---

Notes for MARILYN JANE SHAW:
From the Zanesville Times Recorder of Friday, Dec. 3, 1948:

EMPTY STOLEN PURSE FOUND IN COURTHOUSE

"A purse stolen from Mrs. Keith Moore of East Fultonham in a downtown store Wednesday afternoon was recovered early Thursday in the washroom of the courthouse but the $110 it contained was missing.
"Mrs. Moore said she was in a crowded store and felt she had been bumped or shoved by another woman shopper, but did not see the woman who had grabbed the purse and fled."---

Now this article wouldn't have interested me near as much if it hadn't mentioned that Mrs. Keith Moore was from East Fultonham.  As far as I know there was only one Keith Moore in East Fultonham and that was my father.  According to their marriage certificate they were married in Greenup Co., KY on February 2, 1949.  However, the date of this article is Dec 3, 1948.---

   Another mystery to solve.....
