They have aided much in the development and growth of our Country, as distinguished Medical, Legal, Political, and Agricultural people. Moses GOODIN, Sr. was born in 1747, died in 1836. Born of Quaker faith, he later became Baptist. Married to June HULL, born 1750, died 1821. They were buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Somerset, OH. They were the parents of 10 children: David, Phoebe, Moses, Jr., Smith, Mary, Polly, Martha, Jane, Elizabeth, Asa, and Samuel. His son, Moses GOODIN, Jr. was born in 1778, died in 1853. He married Susannah Hartsell, born 1779, died in 1851. They lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. They were buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Somerset, OH. They had 12 children: Mary, David, John, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Jacob, Asa, Mahala, Susannah, Rhoda, Sarah, and Jane. His son, John GOODIN, was born in 1806, died in 1876. He married Elizabeth HAYS, born 1810, died in 1889. They lived in Newark and were buried in Mt. Cavalry [Calvary?] Cemetery. They also had 12 children: Charles, Asa, William, Susan, John, Lucinda, Samuel, Mary, Jane, Isaac E., Margaret, and Francis. His son, Isaac GOODIN, was born in 1849, died 1896. He married Lavina ANSEL, born 1848, died 1923. She was the daughter of Lydia STONEBURNER and Michael ANSEL. They were married in 1872. He was a member of the National Guard and the Odd Fellow Lodge. He was killed while working in a coal mine in 1889. Both are buried in Rehoboth Cemetery. They had 9 children: George b:1872, Archibald Hays b:1880, Bertha b:1882, Maggie Jane b:1884, Fredrick b:1885, Matilda b:1887, twins John & Minerva Jane b:1889, and Elizabeth who died in infancy. John enlisted in World War I and served in Germany and Belgium. His son, George GOODIN, married Della KOONTZ, and they had 8 children: Guy, Lavina, Vint, Maggie, Nellie, Katie, Ruth, and Fred. Another son, Archibald Hays, married Hattie NOBLE, and they had 6 children: Eva M. BRADLEY, Thomas I., William J., Eugene I., Ray W., and Pauline G. TUCKER. Minerva Jane married Earl PACE and they had 4 children: Wilma SHIPLETT, Charles, Rhea BAKER, and John. Bertha GOODIN had 1 son Ralph Emerson born May 8, 1898, and he enlisted in World War I in 1916. He was discharged in 1918 having served in Germany, France, and Belgium. He married Margaret WILLIAMS Oct. 19, 1919. She was born in 1897, died in 1964. She was the daughter of T.B. WILLIAMS and Sarah Ann GRIFFITH. Mr. WILLIAMS was the prosecuting attorney of Perry County, Ohio for 12 years. His family came for Wales to Ptomery, to Perry County. Ralph and Margaret had 2 children: Bertha Ann b:1921, and Thomas Emerson, b:1926, died 1932. Bertha Ann married George TABLER, Jr., in 1939 and had 3 children: Sarah Ann, Gwendollyn Sue, and Freddie Lee. His Thomas was killed at the age of 5 by a car accident. He has 2 great-grandchildren, Stephanie Ann, and Shon Vanoy. His grandson, Freddie Lee, enlisted in the Navy in the Viet Nam war in 1969 and was discharged in 1973."----- ======================================================= Description of Moses GOODIN, Sr., written by his Grandson, Rev, Smith GOODIN Moses Goodin "My Paternal Grandfather was contemporary with Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, the Adamses, Alexander Hamilton, and all those patriots of the Revolution. While he was a true American, he was opposed to bearing arms against his fellowman on account of his firm belief in the Tenets of the Society Friends, for which reason alone he was not enrolled as a Soldier in the Army of the Revolution. "Not so, however, with his only Brother, who was shot down as he stood on picket duty in the war for Independence. My Grandfather's name was Moses Goodin. He was born about the year 1735-6-or 7 and being of a robust constitution and of very temperate habits, he lived to the advanced age of nearly 95. His occupation was mainly that of a farmer, though he was a cooper by trade. In swinging the scythe in a meadow or the cradle in a wheat field he had no equal. "I have frequently heard my father say that when he was 75 years old, he has often known him to cradle wheat all day with men in the very prime of life, who were utterly unable to discount him in the quantity or quality of their work. "When he was over 90 years of age, he spent some months at my father's, and he and father would frequently walk 4 miles to meeting on the Lord's Day, and father, who was not more than 45 years old, could not walk faster or stand the walk better than he. "The writer was contemporaneous with his Grandfather about 11 or 12 years, and could give a great many reminiscences from his own recollection and others from hearsay, if time and space would permit. The following must suffice. "In those early days, wild game such as deer and bears and other smaller game being plenty, most men were what was called "good marksmen;" but Grandfather, during his last stay at father's, which was (as stated before) when he was over 90 years of age, was seldom equalled and never surpassed. It is said of him that he would, after mowing all day, take his gun and watch for deer at a certain "lick," kill one, sleep a few hours, go again in the morning before day, and watch for and kill another, and call on one or more of his sons to help bring it in, then eat his breakfast and go again 3 or 4 miles to do his day's mowing. "And these things were of frequent occurence. It is said of him that he was never known to drink more than a half pint of water at a time, though never so thirsty. "He was a man about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high with short lower limbs, long body, and very muscular arms, and every muscle developed so as to be susceptible of the greatest possible endurance. His weight was about 165 pounds. He was twice married, and was the father of 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters, all of them by his first wife, and all lived to marry and raise families. "The names of his sons were David, Moses, Smith, Asa, and Samuel. The names of his daughters were (I give the names by which they were familiarly known in my boyhood days) Phebe, Betsy, Sally, Jane, and Polly. "When the writer knew them personally, they all, except Phebe and David, lived, and most of them died in Perry County, Ohio. My father, whose name was Asa, died in Indiana, near Montpelier. Notes for DAVID GOODIN: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: PLEASANT TOWNSHIP Text taken from the website: http://heritagepursuit.com/HarPleasant.htm "DAVID GOODIN, retired hotel-keeper, Kenton, was born in Somerset County Penn., May 31, 1805, and is the only living son of Smith and Nancy (Skinner) Goodin. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, whence they emigrated, settling near Somerset, Perry Co., Ohio, in 1808. Smith Goodin was among the early pioneers of that county, where he died in the forty-seventh years of his age. The widow and her children, three sons and two daughters, came to Hardin County in January, 1830, and David Goodin succeeded John W. Williams in a hotel standing on the site now occupied by Bans Block, known as the Goodin Block, in Kenton. Here our subject was engaged as hotel proprietor for fifteen years, being among the first that started in this section. He afterward turned the hotel into business rooms, which were destroyed by fire in 1856, subsequent to which he erected the present structure. For the past thirty years, he has lived a quiet and unostentatious life, attending to the landed estates in this county and in Iowa, where he had a large tract of land. He was one of the founders of the Kenton Savings Bank, of which he was, for some years, one of the directors, still retaining an interest in the institution. He was elected Associate Judge in 1840, serving for seven years to the satisfaction of his constituents. He also served in the City Council several terms, and has always taken an active interest in the public welfare of his county. Judge Goodin was joined in marriage in Somerset, Ohio, in December, 1825 to Miss Sarah Kishler, a daughter of John Kishler and a native of Pennsylvania, where her family were pioneers of Mifflin County. This union has resulted in ten children, five living, viz. : Alfred, resident of Nevada, Iowa; Elizabeth, widow of William Stanley, and resident of Des Moines City, Iowa; Isabel B., wife of Dr. John Dimmett, residing in Laramie, Wyoming; Mary J., widow of Charles Peet, residing with her parents on the homestead; and David E., at home."----- 4. Notes for SAMUEL SKINNER: The following letters were written by Samuel Skinner, brother of Rhoda (Skinner) Black. With their parents, George and Mary (Goodin) Skinner and family, they came to Washington Township, Sandusky County, Ohio in 1830 from Perry County, Ohio. They were of Scottish descent. Samuel Skinner was born in 1814 and died in Fremont in 1902. He was the father of one son, George Washington (Wash) Skinner and nine daughters. Copied as written, by Marilyn (Snyder) Ziegman, 628 W. North St., Fostoria,OH 44830 Fremont, Sept.10, 1893 I have often thought of writing something of my life for my children to read when I am gone, which will not be very long anymore. Soon will be 80 years old. I was born in Perry County, Ohio May 10, 1814. Came to this county April 10, 1830. Soon will be 60 years ago. It was truly a black swamp then, there was but three (3) families then living in Washington township when we settled in it. Not one laid-out road in it. I helped to cut the first one, which was the Rollersville Road. The township was not named and not till 1831. Quite a strife what it should be called. Many wanted it called Perry as a good many had settled in it from Perry County. Well, I had formed with the young people where I came from and it did seem to me I could not stay here. Could see nobody, nothing but the big woods and wild animals - they was very plenty. I have killed wagon loads of deer. If I had a little money I certainly would not staid here. Should have run away from my father's home. But having no money kept me here. My Mother died one year after arriving here; left Father and me, George, Aaron, Nathan and Mary Ann, a little girl. We done the best we knew how to keep house. But it wasn't very pleasant for at least, then Father married again. (Sally Johnson in 1833) Two more boys in the family. That made it worse if possible. I then went to the Portage River to work at 8 dollars per month where Elmore is now. I put over many lonesome days. I was then about 18 years old. In the fall of 1833 on the 17th day of October I married Elizabeth Geeseman. About 10 days later moved in a log cabin we built inside of 10 days on the go acre lot that Tom Hufford now owns. There had not been a tree cut on it unless it might of been a coon or (?) tree. It was a very wet lot; at times it was near all under water. When we began to keep house we was very poor indeed. I think if everything we had would not brought 50 dollars. The house was 16" x 18" clapboard. Roof held down by waited poles, floor of split puncheon, door of same material Board holes in the wall and put poles in for bedstead. Basswood bark for cord. Don't think there was 1/2 pound of nails used in the house. Cut a hole in the walls, tacked strips across and pasted grease paper on it for window. We had no chairs in the house for 2 year. Used stools made out of split basswood No saw mills; could not get lumber If we even had the money. Sept.11, 1893 The wild animals were deer, wild turkey, wolves, wildcat, coon, opossum and porcupine. Many a night I got up and shot off the gun to drive the wolves away. But never killed one. We went to work was both of us well and hearty. Cleared off a patch that winter for corn and potatoes. In the spring, planted it Growed nice until the June flood came. Everything drowned out We saw hard times indeed. We often had no bread for days at a time We sifted bran and made bread of that. At times lived on corn bread and wild meat mostly. I had to work from home 1/2 of the time and go to the river to get work about 6 miles. Got 50 cents per day. Got one bushel of corn for a day's work. We used corn bread mostly. Knowing what 1 do now and was young again I would not take a section of land there as a gift and go through the same hardships. You may think that strange to look at things as they are now. But it seemed all rite we did not no anny better. We worked with a will. The next July, Wash was born. Then we had something to amuse ourselves with. Our family increased fast. Soon had a family of 10 children and it makes my heart ache to think back how they was raised compared to the way children are raised now They went barefoot 8 months in the year and dotes very scanty indeed. Dec.14, 1893 Since writing the above, I have had a hard attack of kidney trouble. Think I will never get over it. Am much better than I was. In looking over some papers today I found a letter from my Uncle Samuel Goodin dated 1854. it made me think of my old relatives that have passed away. Not one uncle left. I feel that my time is short here; will have to leave you all and also the property that we worked so hard for. Hope you all will use it to good advantage whatever may be left You children are scattered over a large territory. Been looking for some of you to come and see us for some time. Got a card from Wash today saying Em and Ann would be here next week, so will have to wait another week. So goes the time, one week after another. The reunion we had last fall done us a great favor. Wish it could be repeated. But that can't hardly be. December 14, 1893 Your Mother died March the 8th 1863. Some over one year, married the widow Guyer (Sarah Guyer in 1870) of Grand Rapids, Wood County, Ohio. Since then have seen many cloudy days with some sun shine. Now I don't know what further to say. if I had the education that many have I could write much more. I am feeling pretty well but still have the disease working on me. Am so light headed many times most fall down. Am much like my brother, David was. My six sisters are dead and two brothers out of twelve of us. I may write more hereafter. About 50 years ago I was on jury to try Mr. Sperry for murdering his wife. It commenced Monday morning. Saturday at noon we got the charge from the judge. We stood 6 to 6 till Sunday about 9 o'clock we called the Judge to give this charge over on certain points.. Went back to our room and soon agreed; found him guilty of murder in the first degree. All circumstancial evidence. Mr. Rose and I were the last to agree to it. He was sentenced to be hung on Sunday. Before he was to hang his children was brought in to see him. In his native state he was reared to manhood and received such educational advantages as the school of that day afforded. Having attained to mature years, in 1837 he led to the marriage altar Miss Rachel Smith who was also a native of the Buckeye State. They began their domestic life in Ohio, but after seven years determined to try their fortune in the West and in 1844 we find them on their way to Iowa. They chose Farmington, than a small village as a favorable location, but the following year removed to Lee County where Mr. Goodin remained until the death of his wife, which there occurred in 1850. Two children were born of that union�William, and Mary, wife of John Lightfoot. Mr. Goodin was again married in 1853, the lady of his choice being Caroline McEhany. They became the parent of five children who are yet living�Ella, Edward, Ida, Alfred and Charles. During his residence in this county, Mr. Goodin followed teaming. He made his home in this community from 1844 until 1867, when severing his business relations he removed to Knoxville, Marion County Iowa, making his home in that community for some time. He then again came to Van Buren County and settled in Farmington, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died in 1889, respected by all who knew him. One of its pioneer settlers, he had witnessed most the entire growth of the county and was acquainted with its history of progress and development. He faithfully discharged every duty of citizenship and whenever called upon to aid in the promotion of any worthy enterprise, cheerfully responded. Karol 12 Feb 2000 from The Crete Vidette, Thursday, 16 November 1899) DIED GOODIN - At his residence in Crete, Nebraska, on Monday, November 13, 1899, Isaac Goodin, of pneumonia. Aged 82 years, 7 months and 3 days. Isaac Goodin was born in Perry county, Ohio April 10, 1817. He had three sisters and three brothers. He survived them all, although among the oldest. He was married to Miss Fannie Gardner on the 26th of August, 1838. To them was born three sons and five daughters. Two sons and four daughters are still living. He was raised on a farm. His education was very limited having attended school but about three months of his life. In 1847 he was appointed post master of Woodberry, Ohio, which position he held until the fall of 1853, when he emigrated to Blackford county, Indiana. In the fall of 1856 he was elected sheriff of Blackford county and served four years. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him post master at Hartford City, the county seat of Blackford county. In 1861 he enlisted in the 34th Indiana Infantry and was made first lieutenant of Co. I. While in camp in Kentucky, his health failed and he resigned and came home. He was at once appointed Provost Marshall, which office together with the post office he held until the fall of 1864, when he moved to Iowa county, Iowa. In 1867 he was elected county judge of Iowa county, serving two years in that position. In 1869 he moved to Saline county, Nebraska and took a homestead. In 1870 he was elected from Saline county and all unorganized territory west, to the lower house of the legislature. In 1874 he was elected judge of Saline county to fill vacancy and served one year. He has served some twenty-five years as justice of the peace in Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska. The funeral services were held at his late residence on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Pearson delivered a feeling and tender tribute to his memory, and President Perry of Doane College offered a fervent prayer full of consolation and hope for the many friends of deceased. The services were conducted under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post of which comrade Goodin was a charter member. The remains were followed to Riverside by a large concourse of people who had known the deceased for many years. The grave was beautifully banked with American flags, and as the casket was tenderly lower to its silent home every one felt that Father Goodin was "at rest", and if there is such a thing as a commingling of departed spirits, he was already enjoying a happy reunion with his life companion for 53 years, and who died on the 16th of April 1891. He was a faithful husband, an indulgent father, and ememplary (transcriber note: this is spelling published in paper) citizen and a true friend of humanity. He will be missed and mourned by old and young. And yet, having filled out the full measure of an active and useful life, having gone to join his many friends in the great beyond, who would call him back if they had the power. Rhine, Mrs. Isaac Rhine, Mrs John Townsend, with many grandchildren and some great grand children were present at the funeral, and all have the satisfaction of knowing that he had every care and attention that could be bestowed upon him, during his short illness, and that he had the highest respect and admiration of every man, woman and child who so fortunate as to have his acquaintance. Although gone from our sight, his life will be held up as an example for all and the influence of his upright life and his pure character will be as a benediction upon the children of man. She was married to Isaac Goodin Aug 26, 1838, moved to Blackford Co., Ind, in 1853 and remained until 64 then going to Iowa Co., Iowa, leaving there in 69, coming to Nebraska, came to Crete 15 years since, has had eight children six are now living. She died April 16, 1891, she was of cheerful disposition and although she had attained the age of 73 was active and energetic. She had a kind word for all and will be sadly missed by her large circle of friends. She was a friend in prosperity and distress. She was prominent in aiding soldiers and their families. Holland Corps was organized mainly by her efforts. At the time of her death she was Senior Vice. He was married there in 1830. Nancy was the daughter of Colonel Samuel and June Skinner Goodin. Both the Skinners and the Goodins were pioneer families in Perry Co. Ohio Their family held to the Primitive Old School Baptist Church. John was authorized to preach, but seldomdid. They lived on a farm south of Somerset in Perry County Ohio and his advicewas often sought on matters of public interest. He was director of the poor in Perry County in 1859. Above his fireplace mantle was a picture of Oliver HazardPerry and he always said the Oliver was a cousin of his. His granddaughter Miss Hickman of Newark Ohio still has this picture (1932). He died August 11, 1890. Nancy was born in 1812 and died in 1892. Both are buried in the Hopewell cemetery near Somerset beside the church where they held their membership for so many years. GOODIN, general farmer, Chester Township, is a native of Ohio, born in that part of Delaware County which is now part of Morrow County, March 17, 1836. His parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (Donaldson) Goodin, were natives of Pennsylvania, the father born in Somerset County, of Welsh descent, and the mother born in Washington County, of Irish ancestry. The families of both parents removed from their homes in Pennsylvania to Perry County, Ohio, in an early day, and there Samuel Goodin and Elizabeth Donaldson were married, and in the fall of 1835 they removed to what is now Morrow County, Ohio, where the father died April 24, 1854. In the spring of 1855 Mrs. Goodin removed with her family to Allen County, Indiana, and in February, 1858, came to Wells County, locating in Chester Township, where the mother resided until her death in the fall of 1880. James D. Goodin, the subject of this sketch, was reared and educated in the common schools of Morrow County, Ohio. He was twenty-one years of age when he came with his father's family to Wells County, and here he has since made his home with the exception of one year. But as you know Isaac and Fanny went to Blackford county. I think his brother Smith located around Montpellier, Blackford County also. Lastly, has anybody done any research in Somerset Co., PA? Maybe it was always assumed Somerset Co., OH. I once found an Isaac Goodin in the tax records there. But couldn't make any connection. I will have to go through my stuff and find it. His father, who was of Scotch-English descent, and a man of much ability, died at his home in Kenton, Hardin Co., Ohio, January 20, 1877, aged seventy-seven years. His mother, a prominent and esteemed member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, died in Kenton in 1858, leaving seven children. Joel, the eldest of the family, was educated in the common schools of Tiffin, Seneca Co., Ohio, supplemented by a course of study at the Norwalk Seminary, and the Columbus Academic and Collegiate Institute, both in Ohio. His attention while in school was more especially devoted to scientific and business branches, his vacations being occupied as clerk in mercantile business. When he was twenty-three he took charge of the settlement of the mercantile business of his father, the latter having sold out his store. He also commenced the study of law in the office of Bradley Champ, in Kenton, with whom he subsequently formed a partnership in real estate and brokerage business, which continued about three years. He was admitted to the practice of law by the Supreme Court of Ohio, February 28, 1834, having previously been in mercantile business at Kenton, Ohio, about two years, and for a short time on a farm. He was married at Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, January 8, 1846 to Miss Elizabeth Christ, who later was one of the honored pioneer women of Kansas, and who died in Cincinnati, Ohio, May 21, 1870, at the age of forty-six years, leaving two sons--Charles W., and John F. C. On May 16, 1854, Mr. Goodwin sic with his wife and two children started for Kansas, and on the 16th of August, 1854, settled on the Wakarusa, four miles southwest of the present site of Lawrence, where he lived with his family through the troublous and exciting years of territorial strife, and was known at home and abroad as a staunch and reliable Free-state man, and an open, outspoken friend to the cause. He was appointed by Governor Reeder as the first Justice of the Peace in Kansas Territory; was one of the Free-state candidates for the first Territorial Council, and delegate or officer in nearly every Free-state Convention held in the Territory. He was Clerk of the House of Representatives under the Topeka Constitution when the Legislature was dissolved by Colonel Sumner, July 4, 1856, Clerk of Territorial Council in 1857, and Auditor of State in 1858. In the latter year he opened an office as an attorney in Douglas County and subsequently removed to Ottawa, Franklin County, where he is still engaged in the practice of his profession. GOODIN, an early lawyer and legislator and a free-state leader, was born at Somerset, Perry County, Ohio, February 24, 1824. He received an academic education, after which he took up the study of law. Early in 1854 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and the following June located upon the Wakarusa River in what is now Douglas County, Kansas. Mr. Goodin was a delegate to the Big Springs convention; was clerk of the lower house of the Topeka Legislature until it was dispersed by Colonel Sumner; was secretary of the council in the free-state Legislature of 1858, and the same year began the practice of law in Douglas County, but soon afterward removed to Ottawa. Notes for WILLIAM GOODIN: From the Portrait and Biographical Album of Jefferson and Van Buren Counties � 1890 WILLIAM GOODIN William Goodin, son of the pioneer, Asa Goodin, claims Ohio as the State of his nativity, his birth having occurred on November 14, 1838, in Perry County. However, he there spent but six years of his life. In 1844 he accompanied his parents on their immigration to the Territory of Iowa and in the district schools of Van Buren County he acquired a limited education. As his father needed his services his attendance at school covered only about six terms, but subsequent reading, observation and experience have made him a well-informed man. In 1854, when a lad of sixteen years, he left the parental roof and started out in life for himself, making his own way in the world as a day laborer. In 1855 he began running upon the Des Moines and Mississippi rivers and followed that business for some six years. Feeling that the country needed his services and believing it his duty to respond to the call for troops, he enlisted at the beginning of the war, joining Company A, of the First Iowa Cavalry on June 15, 1861, at Keokuk. He participated in all the engagements of his company and remained with the regiment, faithfully performing his duty, until mustered out at Davenport Iowa. On leaving the service, Mr. Goodin returned to Farmington where he embarked in the grocery business, which he has since followed. On embarking in business he invested $275, but the stock he has greatly increased to accommodate his ever growing patronage. He has now one of the leading stores in Farmington, where may be found the best grades of everything kept in a first class grocery. Courteous treatment and fair dealings have won him favor with the public and he now reaps a good income from his business. It was in the month of September of 1864, that William Goodin and Miss Matilda Rogers, a native of Ohio, were united in marriage. Their union was blessed with two children, Inez and William Collier, who died November 25, 1883. In political sentiment Mr. Goodin is a Democrat, and in civic societies belonging to the Grand Army of the Republic and the Masonic fraternity. He is a Knight Templar Mason, Treasurer in the Blue Lodge and Scribe of the Chapter. Mr. Goodin is an enterprising and progressive citizen who labors for the county�s interest and is a worthy representative of one of its pioneer families. From Biographical and Historical Record of Jay and Blackford Counties, Indiana The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1887 John G Wood John G Wood, farmer and stock dealer, section 6, Harrison Township, is one of the leading citizens of Blackford County. He is a native of Morrow County, Ohio, born April 1, 1842, a son of Rezin [sic] Wood. He accompanied his parents to Blackford County when ten years of age, and here he was reared, and was educated in the district schools. During the war of the Rebellion he was among those enlisted in defense of his country's honor, serving six months in Company H, One Hundred and Eighteenth Indiana Infantry. He was married October 13, 1864, to Jane Bugh, a native of Perry County, Ohio, daughter of Bernhard Bugh. To Them have been born nine children, six of whom are living - Nora, Emma, Norman, Nellie, Ollie [Olive, my grandmother], and Lillie. Austin, Arthur, and a babe unnamed are deceased. Austin died July 27, 1887, aged nineteen years, ten months and eighteen days. After his marriage Mr. Wood located on the farm where he now lives, but in 1867 removed to Washington Township, where he lived ten years, when he returned to his present farm. His homestead contains 160 acres of well improved land, and he also owns 240 acres in Washington Township. His residence and farm buildings are commodious and comfortable. Mr. Wood is a member of the Patrons of Husbandry. ================================== Here is another biographical sketch from The Biographical Record (Sorry, I don't have the publisher, etc.) John G Wood, a prominent business man of Hartford City and ex-treasurer of Blackford County, is descended paternally from an old Pennsylvania family and on the mother's side from one of the pioneers of Perry County, Ohio. His father, Reason Wood, moved in an early day from Monongahela county, Pennsylvania, to Morrow county, Ohio, where he met and married Jane Goodin, and later located in the town of Woodbury, where he worked at the blacksmith trade until his removal, in 1853, to Blackford county, Indiana. For some years after coming to this state he followed his trade, but subsequently exchanged it for agricultural pursuits, taking charge of a small farm in Harrison township which came into his possession prior to his removal to Blackford county. He made his home on this place until 1882, when he disposed of his real estate and moved to Saline county, Nebraska, where he remained until the death of his wife, after which he returned to this county and purchased a farm a short distance west of Montpelier, in the township of Harrison, where his death occurred on the 25th day of July, 1896. By his first marriage, noted above, Reason Wood became the father of the following children: Sarah E., wife of John Hart, of Harrison township; Mary M., deceased; Maude J., deceased; Lucinda, wife of George W. Woolford, of Saline county, Nebraska; John G., whose name appears at the beginning of this article, and Asa Smith, deceased. Mr. Wood was married a second time at Montpelier, but to this unions there was no issue. Much might be written of Reason Wood as a man and citizen. He belonged to that large and industrious class that do much in a quiet way to advance the material interests of the country and by lives directed and controlled by the principles of moral rectitude give character and tone to the community. Intelligent beyond the majority, he was a great reader, fully informed on all the leading questions of the day, and he wielded a potent influence for the Republican party in his township. In religious belief he was unswerving in his loyalty during the greater part of his life and in the faith of which he passed from the church militant to the church triumphant. John Goodin Wood was born April 1, 1842, in Morrow county, Ohio, and there he passed the first years of his life. In 1853 he was brought by his parents to Blackford county, Indiana, from which date until his twentieth year he remained on the home farm in Harrison township, attending meanwhile the common schools and obtaining a practical knowledge of the branches taught therein. In the spring of 1863 he responded to the country's call for volunteers by joining Company H, One Hundred and Eighteenth Volunteer Infantry, under Captain W. G. Lett, with which he served a little less than one year, being mustered out at Indianapolis at the expiration of his period of enlistment. Returning home, he farmed for his father until 1865, on October 13th, of which year, he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Bugh, daughter of Barnhardt and Hannah J. (Coddington) Bugh, and immediately thereafter engaged in agricultural pursuits for himself on the home place in Harrison township. After three years thus spent Mr. Wood purchased a place of his own in the township of Washington, consisting of one hundred and twenty acres of fertile land, which under his successful management became one of the best farms in that part of the country. He made this place his home for a period of ten years, when he removed to the old home farm which in the meantime he had purchased and which is still in his possession. Mr. Wood's success as a farmer more than met his expectations and during the period of his residence in the country he enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most through and progressive agriculturalists of the country. In 1894 he was elected to the office of treasurer of Blackford county and the better to attend the duties incident thereto he rented his farm and removed to Hartford City where he since continued to reside. After acting as custodian of the county funds two years and discharging his official functions faithfully and efficiently, Mr. Wood, at the expiration of his term, retired from the office and in partnership with W. H. Cox engaged in the grocery business. Within one month he purchased his partner's interest and since that time has been sole proprietor of one of the largest and best appointed grocery houses in the city. As a business man Mr. Wood easily ranks with the first of Hartford City and his influence on the commercial interests of the place has been such as to bring him into prominent notice, not only to the people of the county, among whim he is widely and favorably known, but also to wholesale dealers in his line in large business cities of the country. By carefully studying the wishes of the public and courteously catering thereto, he has succeeded in building up a very extensive trade. In addition to this he also gives personal attention to his large farming interests in Blackford and other counties, owning a beautiful place of one hundred and sixty acres in Harrison township, two hundred and forty acres in the township of Washington, upon which are six producing oil wells, and other valuable property in city and county, all of which came to him as the result of his careful business forethought and successful operations as a financier. Mr. Wood is one of the wheel horses of Republicanism in Blackford county and as such assisted largely in leading his party to victory in a number of campaigns, and it was in recognition of his efficient services that he was elected to the important official position before mentioned. His personal standing as a citizen is without a flaw and his popularity with all classes irrespective of party affiliation is ample proof that the trust reposed in him has by no means been misplaced. In a very large sense the life of Mr. Wood, though in the main quiet, has been marked with great success. He has never been the man to boost of his achievements or parade his virtues before the public. From a comparatively humble origin, with all the disadvantages of beginning life with but limited capital, he has succeeded in winning success from adverse circumstances and attaining a standing for moral principles and influence seldom met with. His whole life has been exemplary and his example is worthy of imitation by those with fortunes yet to be achieved. Mr. Wood is connected with the Pythian brotherhood, the G. A. Mrs. Fulton had been a Coeur d'Alene resident since 1913 when she and her late husband, who died June 15, 1934, moved here from Waterman, Ill. She was the former Olive Wood, born at Hartford City, Ind., June 26, 1883. During her residence here, Mrs. Fulton was an active member of the First United Presbyterian church. T. Fulton well known Coeur d'Alene broker who died Saturday evening, will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the Mooney chapel. Rev. R. J. Hunter of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Interment will be in Forest cemetery. James Thompson Fulton was born at Waterman, Ill., 53 years ago and resided there until 21 years ago when he came to Coeur d'Alene. He owned and operated the Fulton Grain and Feed store until 1929 when he sold this business and opened a brokerage office which he has conducted since that time. During his years of residence here he has been active in civic affairs. He was a member of the school board for 12 years and was secretary and treasurer of the Coeur d'Alene highway district for nine years. He was affiliated with the Presbyterian church and was also a member of the local Elks lodge. His death on Saturday followed an illness of several weeks. Surviving him are his wife, Olive; two sons, Robert G Fulton of Spokane and Richard W. Fulton of Coeur d'Alene; one daughter, Dorothy L. D., of Logan, was born near Waynesburg, Pa., Feb. 14, 1830, a son of James and Mahala (Moore) Dollison. When he was two years old he came with his parents to Ohio. They settled on a farm near Zanesville, where he lived till manhood, and was given a good common school education. When he was twenty years of age he began to teach, and taught continuously for five years. During this time he studied medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. P. J. Greene, of Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, studying with him three years. He took his primary course of lectures at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the winter of 1862. He then practiced until October, 1872, when he entered the Starling Medical College, at Columbus, Ohio, from which he graduated as M. D. in March, 1873. His first practice was in Ilesboro, Hocking Co., Ohio, from 1856 till 1873, when he came to Logan and established his present practice. In May, 1871, he became a member of the Eclectic Medical Association of Ohio, to which he has contributed essays on different medical topics, still retaining his membership. He has been twice married. His first wife was Jane Barker, of Perry County, Ohio, whom he married Oct. 5, 1852, and who died Oct. 16, 1877, leaving six children---Louisa Ellen, wife of Uriah W. Bowen, of Logan; Emma M., Jennie N., Martha A., James Martin and John Bruce. Sept. 28, 1882, Dr. Dollison married Mrs. E. L. Piper, of Washington Court House, Ohio. In September, 1864, he enlisted in Company C, Sixty-seventh Ohio Infantry, going out as a private, but one month later was promoted to Assistant Surgeon, and served as such until his discharge at the close of the war. He was wounded at Mission Ridge. Following are two obituaries from unknown papers, but presumably are from that local area (Roseville, Somerest). CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE CHARLES FREDERICK STICKLE, son of DANIEL M. and CATHERINE STICKEL, was born July 1, 1842, in Somerset, Perry county, Ohio. He departed this life November 23, 1928, aged 86 years, 4 months and 22 days. He was the last of thirteen children. As a child he was brought unto the Lord in baptism and later was confirmed and united with the local Lutheran church. On April 2, 1871, he was united in marriage to MISS PHIDELIA J. JONES. To them eight children were born, two of whom, GEORGE and MRS. JESSIE MOORE preceded him in death. When the war broke out in 1860, MR. STICKEL volunteered in Company G, Thirty-first Regiment, O.V.I. He was wounded at Missionary Ridge, Nov. 25, 1863 but after a season of hospitalization he re-enlisted and served throughout the remainder of the war. He was with GENERAL SHERMAN on his 'March to the Sea.' He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1865. MR. STICKEL carried the effects of his war wound throughout the remainder of his life. MR. STICKEL was engaged in the tannery business but when this business grew slack he became a butcher. His business dealings were all characterized by the most scrupulous honesty. He was a most considerate husband and a kind father. He was a friend of children, always having candy or some little gifts to share with them. He was interested in public affairs and in people in general. One very beautiful thing he and his good wife did, an act that will always be looked upon and remebered in this community as exemplary, was that these two people took three children of their deceased daughter and son-in-law and made a home for them. MR. STICKEL is survived by the following near relatives: His aged wife, five sons, DONALD of New Lexington, FRANK of Somerset, FRED of Zanesville, CHARLES of Newark, SHERMAN of East Fultonham; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. STICKEL, SOMERSET VETERAN, ANSWERS LAST CALL CHARLES FREDERICK STICKEL, 86, Civil War veteran and retired tanner, died Friday of complications resulting from a wound received years ago. He was born here July 1, 1842 the son of DANIEL MATTHEW STICKLE and ANNA CATHERINE STUFINGER STICKLE, who came to this country in 1833, from Altenhastlen, in Hesse Cassell, Germany. They lived for several years in Warrenton, Va., where MR. STICKLE was an overseer of slaves on a plantation. The Stickle family settled in Somerset in 1840. The deceased is the last of his generatIon and was of a family of 13 children. He enlisted in the service Aug. 3, 1861, in Company G, 31st O.V.I., and was wounded Nov. 25. 1863 in the battle of Mission Ridge. The bullet, which lodged in his lungs was never removed. After he left the hospital, he joined his regiment, and served throughout the remainder of the war, being with GENERAL SHERMAN on his 'March to the Sea'. In the regiment in which MR. STICKLE served, his brother, JOHN and two brothers-in-law, ISAAC SOUSLIN, of Somerset and WM. PARKINSON of Newark, were also soldiers. His brother DANIEL, was also a Civil War veteran. MR. STICKLE came of a long lived family, his mother, reaching the age of 91 years and his brothers and sisters reaching advanced years. On April 2, 1871, he was married to MISS PHIDELIA J. JONES, daughter of JEHU BROOKS JONES and REBECCA GOODIN JONES, who survives him. They were the parents of eight children, and the following survive; DANIEL STICKLE, of New Lexington; FRANK, of Somerset; FRED, of Zanesville; MRS. MARY. F. JOHNSON of Fultonham; CHARLES A STICKLE of Newark; SHERMAN STICKLE of Canton. He also leaves 22 grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews live in Newark. After the war, MR. STICKLE engaged in the tannery business, which he operated for many years. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church. Funeral services were conducted from the Reformed church, Monday morning, Rev. H.P. SCHOEPILE and Rev. MCCLEARY officiating and burial in the Lutheran cemetery bv funeral director OTIS HELSER. Bowen, Publisher, Logansport, Indiana 1903, p 301, 302, 303 Giffon Snow The gentleman whose life history is embodied in this review enjoys distinction as an enterprising farmer and successful stock raiser, while his standing as a worth citizen, with the good of the community ever at heart, is second to that of no other resident of the township in which he lives. Giffon Snow was born on the farm which he now owns and cultivates, August 8, 1865, being the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Booth) Snow, of whom appropriate reference will be found on another page of this volume. Reared in the country and early taught the lessons of industry and thrift with which the majority of farm lads become familiar, young Snow grew up a sturdy youth, strong in his determination to become an honest and useful man and to make the world better by his presence. His acquaintance with practical life began at an early age and until his eighteenth year he assisted with the labors of the farm and contributed his full share to the maintenance of the family. His educational privileges were such as the district schools afforded and these he attended until his seventeenth year, making the most of his opportunities the meanwhile. At the age of eighteen he entered into partnership with his brother to cultivate the home place, each to receive one-third of the proceeds of their labor, the father furnishing the stock and necessary implements for the prosecution of the work. Subsequently, on the death of the father, the two brothers took the farm on equal shares and in this way continued to run it until the place was divided and each received his part of the heritage. Mr. Snow prospered as a farmer and in due time was in a situation to set up a domestic establishment of his own; accordingly, on the 3rd day of September, 1892, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah E. Goodin, daughter of J.D. Goodin, a well known citizen of Chester township. Mrs. Snow was born in Wells County, Indiana, January 21, 1873, and was an infant two weeks old when her mother died. She is a child by her father's first marriage and has two sisters living, viz: Elizabeth, wife of Thomas McGeath, and Nettie, wife of Dillon Hall, her only brother, Madison, dying some years ago. By the second marriage Mr. Goodin had two children, Lawrence and Herman Goodin. For about eight months after his marriage Mr. Snow lived on the home farm and during the succeeding year rented the Wilson place in Chester township, which he cultivated with a fair measure of success until again taking up his residence on the old family homestead. He has brought his share of the farm to a high state of tillage, devotes his attention to general agriculture and by industry and successful management has accumulated a sufficiency of this world's goods to place him in a very comfortable circumstances. As a breeder of live stock, especially Galloway cattle, he has materially increased his income, as he raises for the market nearly every year quite a number of these animals and always received for them the highest price which the best grade of cattle commands. Mr. Snow has voted the Democratic ticket ever since old enough to cast a ballot, but he cannot be called a politician, never stepping aside from his chosen calling to take a very active interest in party affairs. He is a gentleman of quiet, unassuming demeanor, attends strictly to his own business and wherever known has always been unassailable. Honest in all of his dealings and exceedingly sociable in his relations with his fellow men, he is esteemed an excellent neighbor and a loyal friend, and as a citizen no one stands higher or discharges his duty in a more praiseworthy manner. Mr. Snow is an intelligent gentleman and in matters of business is characterized by soundness of judgment which makes his opinions and advice valuable to those who ask for them. Mrs.Snow is a consistent member of the Christian church; while not identified with any religious organization himself, Mr. Snow has profound respect for sacred things and to the extent of his ability contributed of his means for the moral and spiritual advancement of his kind. He is a liberal provider for his family, believes in using the good things of this world and to this end has supplied his home with many of the conveniences and comforts which make rural life pleasant and desirable.
