Application of Plyometrics to the Trunk
Plyometrics can be used to increase power, improve coordination and accommodate the body to explosive movements and forces. When working on the body it is important not to leave out the trunk because it is the base of your body. All body actions are connected to the trunk in someway, shape or form. The trunk includes the thorax, rib cage, abdomen, spine, shoulder, and pelvic girdles.
A weak trunk is not stable under loads. Plyometrics are an excellent way to strengthen the muscles of the trunk.
There are two types of muscles in the trunk as well as in the body. They are postural and phasic muscles. Postural muscles stabilize the body against gravity and phasic muscles are the prime movers that explore and manipulate the environment.
Phasic muscles need to be strengthened Postural muscles need to be inhibited to allow proper movement Plyometrics is a dynamic way to facilitate the weak phasic muscles and inhibit the tight postural muscles.
