The George Bonham & Jabez Nye Family of Plymouth Colony As Found at Lakenham Cemetery in Carver, Massachusetts
Descendants of George Bonham & Benjamin Nye of Old Plymouth Colony
George Bonham, the progenitor of that portion of the Bonham Family that settled in Plymouth Colony, and Benjamin Nye of Sandwich, patriarch of the American Nyes, can be found forever linked by a small number of graves still in existence at Carver's old Lakenham cemetery.
George Bonham Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Jenney are found at rest here, their graves still in rather good condition. Along with George and Elizabeth Bonham can be found their daughter Ruth Bonum who married Jabez Nye (Jonathan, Benjamin). Ruth's grave is unfortunately in deteriorating condition though Jabez Nye's grave is still in rather good shape. Also to be found at Lakenham are George and Elizabeth's daughter Susanna Bonum, Jonathan Nye and a young Jabez Nye, son of Bonum Nye, born 1749 who died at 6 yrs old in 1755. It was hoped early on that this Jabez Nye was the husband of Mary Fuller I was seeking, but then his grave at Lakenham was found.
As I've indicated, my personal interests in the Bonham/Nye Family of Carver lies slightly further to the south and west in Wareham. A Jabez Nye married Mary "Molly" Fuller in Wareham on 1768. Neither individual of this couple have yet been clearly identified. The Nye Family Association had mis-identified this Jabez in their work of 1907, noting the marriage to Mary Fuller at Wareham but then going on to say that "the next record found" for Jabez was his marriage to Temperance Crocker at Sandwich. The Nye Association today knows that these are two different Jabez Nyes and unfortunately it is he who married Mary Fuller that remains undiscovered.
I believe Mary Fuller to have been the Mary Fuller found in the Samuel Fuller Through Five Generations "Silver Book". In that work, MF 10:46, we find Mary Fuller, daughter of Samuel and Anna Tinkham Fuller of Plympton, born there on 23 Nov 1748. It makes sense that Jabez Nye was somehow out of the Carver family of Nyes, somehow the grandson or grand-nephew of the Jabez Nye found here at Lakenham, but no record of the birth of another Jabez exists. That Mary Fuller of Plympton had brother's Benjamin and Sylvanus, and Mary (Fuller) Nye at Wareham named her only two sons Benjamin and Sylvanus, stands as the only circumstancial proof I have found that this is indeed Mary who married Jabez Nye. Mary Fuller is buried at Wareham's Agawam cemetery having died at Wareham on 2 February 1802.
George Bonham Jr's sister Sarah married John Bryant and is thereby to be considered the matriarch of the extensive Churchill/Bryant Family of Old Plympton. William Churchill Sr., son of the immigrant John Churchill of Plymouth Colony, married John and Sarah (Bonham) Bryant's daughter. Plympton's Churchill/Bryant family graves can be seen here: Plympton's Churchill--Bryant Family
George R. Nye, along with Jonathan Shaw and , has published a two part article in NEHGR 158-159 with the lastest research on the "Origins of Benjamin Nye."
