| Telling the Truth Before God and One Another Jesus said "You will know the truth and the truth will make you free." For more than thirty years the United Methodists Church has clung to a particular untruth that has prevented us from claiming the freedom that Christ promises. The General Conference has declared to the world that United Methodists are in agreement about the interpretation of Christian tradition as it speaks to human sexuality. The truth is we do not agree. We will not begin to find healing around this place of pain in our common life until we are willing to tell the truth. Therefore we, of the South Carolina Annual Conference, propose to General Conference 2004 that the following changes be made to The Book of Discipline, 161.G: - Delete, "Although we do not condone the practice of homosexuality and consider this practice incompatible with Christian teaching, we affirm that God's grace is available to all." - Add in its place, "Differences of opinion among faithful Christians regarding sexual orientation continue to deeply divide the church. We stand before God admitting that we have thus far been unable to reach common ground. As we continue to discern God's will together, we are united in declaring our understanding that God's grace is available to all." |
| Below is a resolution being supported by our members to be sent by our Annual Conference to the 2004 General Conference. |
