International recognition of the Day of Vesak
The General Assembly

        Acknowledging the hope expressed by the international Buddhist Conference, heed in Srilanka in November 1998, That the Day of Vesak The Day of Full Moon in the month of May each year, be internationally recognized and, in particular, at United Nations Headquarters and other United Nations offices,

        Recognizing that the Day of Full Moon in the month of May each year is the day most sacred to Buddhist, who commemorate, on that day , the birth of Buddha ,
His attainment of enlightenment and his passing away,

        Considering that international recognition at United Nations Headquarters and other United Nations offices would constitute Acknowledgment of the contribution that Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made, for over two and half millennia, and continues to make to the spirituality of humanity.

การรับรองให้วันวิสาขบูชาเป็นวันสำคัญสากล
ที่ประชุมสมัชชาสหประชาชาติ

        รับทราบถึงความประสงค์ของที่ประชุมพุทธศาสนิกชนสากล (international Buddhist Conference) ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่กรุงโคลัมโบ เมื่อเดือนพฤศจิกายน 2541 ในอันที่จะให้วันวิสาขบูชา ซึ่งตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือน 6 ของทุกปี เป็นวันสำคัญสากล ให้ถือเป็นวันหยุดของสำนักงานใหญ่และที่ทำการขององค์การสหประชาชาติ

        ตระหนักว่าวันวิสาขบูชา ซึ่งตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือน 6 ของทุกปี มีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งต่อพุทธศาสนิกชนทั่วโลก เพราะเป็นวันที่พระพุทธเจ้า ประสูติ ตรัสรู้ และปรินิพพาน

         พิจารณาเห็นว่า หากสำนักงานใหญ่และที่ทำการขององค์การสหประชาชาติ ให้การรับรองวันสำคัญดังกล่าวแล้ว ย่อมถือเป็นการยกย่องว่าพระพุทธศาสนาอันเป็นหนึ่งในศาสนาที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลก มีคุนูปการอันใหญ่หลวง ในทางจิตวิญญาณ ต่อมวลมนุษย์ ตลอดช่วงระยะเวลา 2500 และสืบต่อไปในอนาคต
