My Dear Parents

I have just received yours of the 19th and was as is ever glad to hear from you or any of you. I have as ever been spared through the goodness of the Lord and am in some better health than I was when I wrote you before this. I am the poorest that ever you saw me. The enemy pickets and ours keep up firing all the time and our detachment works every nite in view of our lines and the bullets cuts close some times. I have heard them til I fear I am becoming too carless. I am not afraid of them and we have had several of our detachment wounded, we had one wounded last nite in the leg where I was at work it is a wonder there aren't more of us hurt than what is. The bullets come about us very thick. Capt. Carter and one of his men was kiled today in the trenches by a shell and others wounded. Capt. Carter was a son of our old sherrif.  Carter  belonged to the 26th Regt SCV. They say he was whittling with his knife and telling a joke when at the twinkle of an eye he was hurled into eternity and so goes many. I have been in hearing of where they are fiting for several days but I have seen no more  since I wrote you before. We have taken a great many prisoners and artillery all is looking with anxiety now to the Northern nomination for President which will come off next Monday. I supose all on both sides is anxious for peace, God speed the time I pray.

Sunday morning 28th

Dear Mother

I don't feel so well this morning. I have turns of sick stomach and my bowels very much out of order again but I hope I will feel better after awhile. I slept very little last nite. We go out to work at first dark and one half works 4 hours and they stop and the other half works 4 hours more. I was on the last part last nite and slept none hardly and the flies is so bad I can't sleep of a day. You wanted to no the name of my Capt and letter of my company Capt John C. Evans Capt A23 Regt, SCV Evans Brigade. My Capt & 2 of the lieuts is home on sick furlough. The Capt. is a smart man and a mighty good man to. I would not change him for no man that I no of and the Lieuts is all very good men. You need not send no more paper. I had got some money from home and we will be paid some this week. I have nothing new to write you. I saw Wm Parsons and Pinkney a few days ago, they were well and I still think that if we git the yankies of from the railroad they will leave here.  I wish they would I am truly tired of this place. I never new how good home was before. I never new how much we had been blessed.   We have been too unthankful for the great blessings we have been blesed with. Milk is one dollar a small tumbler, beef $5 per lb., apples fit to eat $3 per doz., watermelons from up to $15 apeace and not large and everything the same and I close. I remain your same affectionate & devoted son J.J. Moore
