I really dont want to say this, but I am so disappointed with this film. Don Bluth, with the help of Gary Goldman, directed it, and that displeases me. He created my favorite animated film of all time, An American Tale, and to think he made this dark piece made me really wonder what was going on in his mind. The special effects are phenomenal, but the story takes forever to get to any sort of action or point. The opening scene, of a young boy and his father fleeing the earth before it is destroyed, is actually quite touching, but from there it goes down hill. The story just seems to drag with a bunch of special effects filling the screen with no story. Finally, about the last twenty minutes of the movie, the story picks up the pace and actually has some action. This animated movie was obviously inspired by Japanese anime, but unfortunately does not hold up. The story is too mature for children and too childish for adults. There is not enough action for teenage boys and hardly any romance for teenage girls. I do not know what the target audience was for this film, and I dont think it will ever find it. I caught this film for one dollar at my towns local discount theater and I believe I just about got my moneys worth. This film is quite disappointing, but I am still dazzled by the great animation and visual effects. 1
