Well, Ill be the first to admit it, I was wrong. In my review for Road Trip, I stated that there be no further good crude comedies. Then came this spoof on horror films and I was pleasantly surprised. Not that I expected this to be a bad movie, but I did not predict it being as raunchy as it turned out to be. In this film we are given the same wacky humor that made Theres Something About Mary and American Pie such hits and once again we are given a sweet character. Instead of Mary, we are given Cindy Prescott, an innocent character of sorts, but just as stupid as her friends.
Lets face it, we were all waiting for someone to spoof horror films. Here we are given just about every popular movie of the nineties and even a few from the past. We are given parodied scenes from Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, and even The Usual Suspects; I could have sworn I even saw references to Eyes Wide Shut and American Pie. Thank goodness for the Wayans brothers. In the late eighties, Keenen Ivory Wayans brought us Im Gonna Get You Sucka, a spoof on seventies blaxploitation films and, in my eyes, one of the funniest films of all time. Here, he doesnt accomplish as well, but gives us a still funny film dedicated to putting slasher films in their place. The opening sequence to this film is almost as memorable as the original Scream sequence it lampoons, which is a bit odd consider Scream was a bit of a spoof on horror films itself. It is filled with so many laugh-out-loud moments I could hardly contain myself. Sadly, this also made the rest of the film pale in comparison. It was still funny (one of my favorite lines comes in the flashback sequence where they hit the hitchhiker and Shannon Elizabeths character states Oh my God! We hit a boot!), but nothing in the remainder of the movie could hold up to the opening sequence. However, I do recommend this movie, but you must be strong-stomached. If you thought Theres Something About Mary went overboard with the sex-related jokes, this is not the film for you. If however you are simply in the mood for a comedy of any type, be prepared to sit back and enjoy the wildest (and still entertaining) film of the summer. And stick around after the credits to see a final scene with Special Officer Doofy and his favorite household appliance.
