TAGLINE: The greatest college tradition of all time
I went into I Road Trip with a bit of hesitation. I strongly detest Hollywood
taking advantage of a good film idea and overplaying it. Luckily, Road Trip
takes the gross-out antics that made There's Something About Mary and
American Pie such box office darlings and combines them with the sweet-natured
story that lie underneath the previous two films. Many times, a movie studio will take
a gimmick and forget to actually give it a story. Thankfully, Road Trip does not
follow this path.
Road Trip is the hilarious tale of four college mates making a journey
from Ithaca to Austin in an effort to intercept the reception of a package mistakenly
sent out. In the package, an amateur sex tape! It's destination, the (very) long-time
girlfriend of the lead character. The group, of course, approaches many obstacles, but
they are just so comical that you really don't care.
While the foursome is out on their comic adventures, much hilarity remains back at
the dorm where Barry, the friend that decided not to go, strikes a bond with a
certain snake. Along with this, there is Beth, the video co-star who, though a bit
frisky, is ultimately a sweetheart... though she can be a bit vengeful. Watching this
movie, 2 others came to mind: American Pie, which, if Seann William Scott's
character's name had been Stiffler, this could have been a sequel to, and Overnight
Delivery, a similar tale starring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd. Apparently,
the odd combination works.
The movie stars Breckin Meyer, of Clueless and Go, and Rachel
Blanchard of Clueless the TV show and Carrie 2 as the young couple whose
relationship is in the hands of a package. Outside Providence's Amy Smart is
Beth, the girl who comes between them. And, Tom Green is Barry, the goofy friend thrown
in to keep everyone on their toes. Though this film is not going to be a critical
favorite, it is the perfect movie to watch if you are just in the mood to sit back and
have a good time. Thoroughly enjoyable, though probably the last of a great string of
crude comedies.
