Well I cant say this movie disappointed me, however I never expected much from it in the first place. I should start this review by telling what the story is about, but does it really matter? I mean, anyone going into this film expecting more than Jim Carrey sight gags must really be kidding themselves.
The Farrelly brothers made this film, and it pretty much follows their standard format, a bunch of gross-out stunts and some sex-related gags. However, unlike their previous film Theres Something About Mary, which I consider a comedy classic, this movie just did not have humor that held up. Sure I laughed at a few parts, but generally I found this movie to be not funny, and sometimes even rude. Maybe its because unlike Mary in the previously mentioned film, Irene is not at all innocent, so the gross-out humor doesnt work. Maybe its because I never really find Jim Carrey funny, though I do believe he has the potential to be a very talented actor if he stops taking such roles. Maybe its just because I find this juvenile humor limited and growing tiresome. I just did not really enjoy this film. Basically, this film is so far-fetched that you cannot find it believable, but it has a basis in reality so you cannot enjoy how out-there it is. Amidst the toilet-humor and Jim Carrey facial expressions, the Farrellys are trying to tell a crime story, much like they tried to do with Dumb & Dumber, but you can never take it serious enough to enjoy the story. Jim Carreys character is just too unbelievably ignorant.
I did however find some enjoyment from this film. This comes mainly from the three sons of Jim Carreys character. Their characters are given enough screen time, but I still think they deserved more. They are practically the only reason I did not find this movie ridiculously crude. There is supposed to be a spin-off film of these three characters in the works and I believe it has the potential to be a far funnier film than this one.
I dont really recommend this movie for everyone, but if you enjoy Jim Carrey and typical Farrelly brother fare, this is the film for you. If however you want a little more than jokes that are more likely to make you sick than make you laugh, turn away from here.
