Final Destination is a fun thrill ride that questions fate and death. The story itself is
pretty basic, someone has a vision that a plane is going to blow up, so he gets a bunch of people
off of it, it does blow up, the survivors begin to get killed off, and our clairvoyant gets
accused. But this movie brings an element all its own to it. The killer is not an enraged
teenager, just Death itself, and not an overdone CGI effects ghost, but an eerie shadow and
whistling of the wind. After watching this movie, you will find yourself turning around more
often to that creepy feeling that someone is behind you.
This movie is not just another dead teenager flick. Well, it is, and it is not. Much like
Scream, which this movie will most likely always get associated with, though it shouldnt
considering the two films are quite different, this film combines suspense and humor to make the
story more appealing. The characters are realistic, the death scenes are creepy (with the
exception of one that I found quite humorous - the teacher goes through more torture than a Tex Avery
cartoon), and the suspense is tight. The director of this film really knows how to capture the
moment and make the viewer jump out of their seats. The cast (mainly Idle Hands's Devon
Sawa, Varsity Blues's Ali Larter, Dawson's Creek's Kerr Smith, and American
Pie's Sean William Scott) is quite good and very believable, not just your run-of-the-mill
big-breasted bimbos running up the stairs when they should be running out the front door.
Overall, Final Destination is a thrill-a-minute horror film with an appealing cast and
surprisingly good direction. I can just picture the sequel now! B!
