Michael Mann has done it again. The man known for bringing classic films like Manhunter
and Heat has created another suspenseful masterpiece and has brought Russel Crowe along
for the rider. The Insider is the true story of Jeffrey Wigand, the man whose life was
turned upside down when he decided to rat-out the tobacco industry on 60 Minutes. What
could have turned out to be just another boring drama is an edge of your seat
(literally in my case) dramatic-thriller thanks to Micahel Manns masterful direction. Made up of
untypical camera angles and shady lighting, we are given just the right conditions to sit in
suspense.
In addition to Michael Manns direction, the film is highlighted by the wonderful
performances given by all, buy most notably Russell Crowe and Christopher Plummer.
Russell Crowe is always entertaining and never ceases to amaze me with his acting skills. People
do not often realize how talented this man truly is, mainly due to his chameleon-like
transformations with each character. With every performance, Russell Crowe manages to put out
the character he means to and this is no exception. He definitely gives one of the best
performances of the year.
Christopher Plummer was a pleasant surprise. No doubt, he is a good actor, but the way he
accomplished his portrayal of Mike Wallace is mind boggling. He is right-on-the-money. It is no
wonder Mike, himself, was so upset with the performance. No one likes being told how much of a
tight-ass they can be. This is another of the years greatest performances, despite being snubbed
by the Academy Awards.
Totally, this is a film that fans of its genre will surely appreciate. Directed masterfully,
portrayed superbly, and written incredibly well. If I could have one thing to bitch about it
would be the length. The film is a bit long, but, hey, I can appreciate a film that takes the
time to develop its plot. In a decade when we are given movies with so many plot holes, it is a
necessity to have one that takes the time to cover them up. I am only dropping this film a star
because it is a bit too intelligent for some people and does not meet the attention span of a
majority of the population. As pathetic as those reasons are, I think they had to be said for the
sake of entertainment value. Still, one of the best films of the year! A!
