I wasn't sure what to expect from Insomniac's most recent endeavor, Ratchet and Clank. Sure, I was expecting a well-structured game with a whole lot of innovative gameplay. But the result of a solid 20 hours of gameplay has me saying one line over and over Jak and Daxter? Never heard of em
Gameplay: This is most likely the most striking part of the game. There are multiple worlds to travel through with an interesting, yet somewhat Looney, story to go along with them. The most uncommon duo, with hilarious chemistry, finds them in the fight for the universe as a slightly comic villain plans on destroying the galaxy one planet at a time. With an ingenious use of the current currency of the galaxy, bolts, the creators of Insomniac founded a new meaning to the platformer genre. What would Ratchet and Clank be without its main factor, THE WEAPONS. With over 36 weapons and Gadgets to choose from, it's a wonder why Ratchet and Clank both have trigger fingers. The gameplay is simple lots of enemies to shoot tons of weapons. I absolutely love the way the game allows the player to customize their experience by being able to select whatever weapon he or she chooses. By far, my favorite is the RYNO. Rip Yah A New One. It's the strongest missile launcher in the galaxy. Of course, it's the biggest and baddest weapon (also the most expensive) in the game, but I simply love it. Who knows what that says about my personality? There are no errors in this department of play. The variety of play completely blows Naughty Dog's Jak and Daxter, although that also wasn't a bad game. Kudos to Insomniac. 10/10
Graphics and Sound: What would a platformer be without stellar graphics? I'm not sure; there hasn't really been that many yet. Even so, Ratchet and Clank has possibly the most beautifully rendered character models and backgrounds than any game I have played. The jagged edges do not exist, and every place has its own distinct feel. Like I said before, the graphics are simply worth staring at for a bit. Also, there is absolutely no slowdown in the game. Even when the action gets intense and there like 20 guys on the screen, the game runs at a smooth 60 fps. As for the sound, that too is amazing. Each world has its own music and sound effects. The character voicing is spot on and every weapon has an absurd noise to add to the mix. Overall, a well rounded area. 10/10
Replay Value: This game has tons of replay value. Most of which, I haven't played through yet. Throughout the game, there are Gold Bolts in secret locations to gather. When you beat the game, and you continue a new one, there will be a tower in the first world that allows you to trade your Gold Bolts for the 10 Golden Weapons. Basically, they are the same weapons as before with major improvements. Of course, you will have to give up 4 gold bolts for each one, but they are worth it. Plus, you have to collect all the bolts to get an Epilogue to the game. Also, there are skill points in each world that can be used to unlock the program team's sketchbook and infinite bolts. 9/10
The makers down at Insomniac literally lost many hours of sleep trying to create what possibly has been the most genuine surprise of 2002. Even so, this game is deserving of your time and that of anyone wishing to do exactly what the creators made the game for TO BLOW SH*T UP!!! I loved this game. Overall, this game receives a solid 10/10 |
