How to have a Mage survive in the dangerous nights in the World of Darkness.
As a mage player I have to say that this is by far the hardest and most
complex game of all time. I have been playing it since the release of Mage 1st
Edition. And so here are the essentials.
Wards:
Protective rotes preset in your Sanctum before hand are the ultimate defense.
Common rotes used in this fashion:
Forces 2: Control Minor Forces
Basically a kinetic barrier that deflects attacks, If an
attack is too powerful the barrier will throw you free. Fortunately for you this
is coincidental. If its deflected your opponent misses. If you are thrown away
you dodged. This works best against Melee and Projectile attacks such as
bullets.
Unfortunately this will not work against non-physical magical
attacks (e.g.; it will deflect say a... knife thrown with Forces. However, will
not deflect say a lightning bolt.) or against mundane non kinetic based attacks
(e.g.;
fire or a grenade's explosion... though it will stop the shrapnel) this power
also uses the objects own kinetic force against it meaning that unless it is
moving real fast its going to pass through thus allowing normal interaction to
be possible.
Time 2, Mind 1
Utilizing a precognitive rote you know attacks are to
come. This allows you 1 automatic action BEFORE combat begins because you
know its about to come anyway it also allows you 2 extra dice onto any action.
This is an
action for free with no reaction from opponents. Also always surprises
Werewolves with Spirit of the Frey for in the case of SoF you simply go first
that round BEFORE the werewolf. Mind 1 allows you to use this rote
without getting distracted.
Remember wards are always a way to defend yourself but are also a double edged
sword. First normally when viewed by a Vampire with Aura Perception they see a
mortal when looking at a mage. In this case they see myriad sparkles and know
you are a supernatural/hedge mage. Also Technocrats and Tradition mages alike
with awareness will ping you from
a distance easily.
When you play a mage remember you have to prepare before hand. Wait on an enemy
to come to you if you have to fight. In your sanctum you have a distinct
advantage.
Of course the ultimate advice I give you here is avoid fighting altogether as
its easier to avoid getting shot at then it is to dodge a bullet.
Your Mage Master.
