- Candle in the Wind -
McGregor, TX
-[ Its a somewhat warm and sunny day in McGregor, Texas, a day where most northerners would love anytime of the year. To Texans, its a bit cool out but its still better than the summer heat. Cori-Lynn Matthews loves these kind of days and today is no exception. But first, she has to do the dishes that she was too tired to do the night before. As she runs the sponge over a pan, she feels a slight tap on her tight blue jeans. She looks down and smiles at her daughter, Samantha. Samantha looks like the typical child youd see in a Playschool Toy ad with her mothers blonde hair and blue eyes. She speaks up in the usual 4-year old broken English with a proud Texas accent. ]-
Samantha: Momma, I go outside. Cori: You wanna go outside?
-[ Samantha clasps her hands together and strikes a cute pose, praying that her mother says yes. Cori nods of course and leaves the sink, walking towards the back screen door. As she opens the door, she yells some motherly advice as Samantha runs out the door into the backyard. ]-
Cori: You stay in the backyard, you hear? Samantha: Yes, mother!
-[ She walks back to the sink to continue washing the dishes as she watches her daughter out the back window. Samantha is outside throwing a Frisbee at the familys beige Labrador dog. The dog excitedly plays even though Sams throws only go a foot or two. Cori is interrupted by her older sister, Caroline, who walks into the kitchen, and looks through the window. Caroline isnt as attractive as Cori but she still has her fun at night. ]-
Caroline: Beautiful day out. Cori: Yep. Caroline: Need some help with them dishes? Cori: Nope, Is nearly done.
-[ Caroline looks out the window again and watches Samantha play with the dog. She gets a feeling of regret over her again, just like every time she looks at Coris daughter. Being the ugly duckling out of the two always hurt her, even though shes never told Cori before. When they go out to bars at night to have a good time, the men always hang with Cori because shes so cute looking, while Caroline gets whatevers left. Usually she needs to get a man real drunk or even get herself real drunk to appear easy so she can get some. But thats just the reality of life and she knows it. While Cori has been eye candy for many men in her 23 years on this planet, Caroline has been the more successful one in getting work and earning money. Thats why Cori and her daughter live with Caroline. Its hard to make ends meet when you work at the town liquor store and have to raise a daughter. ]-
Caroline: Should be a great night for partin. Cori: Naw, not tonight. Robert and Is got plans. Caroline: Oh, like you did last night?
-[ Caroline gets a smirk on her face and Cori knows why. ]-
Cori: You heard us? Caroline: Yep. Dis is my house and when I hear the front door open at 3 AM, I wake up. I wouldnt have stayed asleep long anyway wit the way you two were going at it.
-[ Cori blushes. ]-
Cori: Im sorry, Caroline. We didnt mean to wake you. Caroline: Its all right. I was wonderin, when you two gonna shack up? Cori: Do you want Samantha and me to move out or something? Caroline: Naw, its not that. Its just, youre 23 now, have a kid, and no man. Cori: I have a man! Caroline: Then why dont you two get married? You could use the money. Cori: Caroline! I aint gonna marry Rob so Im better off with money! Caroline: I know, but still. You cant always live here. Cori: Well Im working on somethin to get some extra money for Sam and me.
-[ Caroline crosses her arms. ]-
Caroline: Oh yeah, what, cause the liquor store aint cutting it.
-[ Just then, both Caroline and Cori hear a vehicle drive up the gravel driveway towards the house. Cori finishes with the last dish and wipes her hands dry with a towel. Caroline starts to walk towards the front of the house to see who it is. ]-
Cori: Thats probably Robert right now to pick me up.
-[ Caroline pushes the front window drapes away as she looks out into the drive way. Shes surprised to see a green Ford Ranger parked in her driveway instead of a black one. ]-
Caroline: Not unless Robert gone and bought himself a new green truck. Cori: What you talkin about? You must color blind.
-[ Cori leaves the kitchen and walks into the living room to see what her sister is talking about. She looks through the window too and sees the same vehicle. They both look at each other, wondering who it is. They see two men sitting in the front seats but cant make out their faces. ]-
Caroline: Should I get the gun? Cori: No! They could be lost or somethin.
-[ Both the side doors open on the Ford Ranger simultaneously. Then following that, Cody and Tomorrow Man come from out of the doors, Cody on the drivers side. He takes his sunglasses off and places them on the brim of his baseball cap as he looks at the house number one more time. Then Cody and Tomorrow Man start to make their way towards the front door. ]-
Caroline: Go grab Samantha and the gun while I see what these men want. Cori: Good idea.
-[ Cori runs towards the kitchen again, and then out the door to bring Sam in. While she does that, Cody and Tomorrow Man ring the door bell and knock on the front door. Caroline looks back into the kitchen to see if Cori and Samantha are in. As they come in, Cori puts Sam in a bedroom then opens a closet door and grabs a shotgun from behind a few clothes. She stands in the kitchen doorway with the shotgun, loaded and ready. Cody and Tomorrow Man knock again. Caroline doesnt open the door, but speaks through it. ]-
Caroline: Who dare?
-[ Cody and Tomorrow Man look at each other as they try to make out the muffled voice coming from the other side of the door. ]-
Cody: UmCody Carmichael. Im looking for a Cori-Lynn Matthews.
-[ Caroline looks back at Cori, who didnt hears what he said. ]-
Cori: Well? Caroline: They be lookin for you.
-[ Caroline looks towards the door again and speaks to Cody through the door once more. ]-
Caroline: Whats your business? Cody: I got this letter from the state saying Im the father of her daughter. Caroline: What?! Cori: Who is it?
-[ Caroline cant remember the name so she has to ask again. ]-
Caroline: What was your name?
-[ Cody and Tomorrow Man look at each other once again, knowing something isnt adding up here. ]-
Cody: Cody Carmichael.
-[ Caroline looks back at Cori. ]-
Caroline: Cody Carmichael? He says hes Sams dad? Cori: Oh God, let him in! Caroline: What? Why? Cori: Let em in damn it!
-[ Caroline listens to her younger sister and opens the door. Cody and Tomorrow Man look back with a smile. Cody, being true to himself, notices Caroline isnt the greatest looking thing so hes barfing inside. ]-
Cody: Hi.
-[ Tomorrow Man looks into the house and see Cori standing maybe 10 feet away with a shotgun in her hands. ]-
Tomorrow Man: Gun!
-[ Instinctively, both Cody and Tomorrow Man run for their lives back to the truck to seek cover. Cori throws the gun on the floor and runs towards the door. ]-
Cori: No, wait! Nobodys gonna shoot you!
-[ Cody and Tomorrow Man come out from behind the truck and look around to make sure everythings safe. Again, being true to himself, Cody notices how attractive Cori-Lynn is, so he says to himself, I hope thats her. Both Cody and Tomorrow Man make their way back towards the door. ]-
Cody: Hi. Cori: Hi. Sorry, for pointin a gun at you two. Can never be too careful around these parts. Tomorrow Man: Its all right.
-[ Cori extends her hand to Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Man shakes it. Caroline comes out see get closer to the action. ]-
Cori: Im Cori-Lynn by the way and thats my sis, Caroline. Tomorrow Man: You can call me T-Man.
-[ Cori then looks at Cody. ]-
Cori: You still look the same, Cody.
-[ Cody doesnt really recognize her at all seeing as its been 4 years since hes last seen her and all she was only a one night stand. But still, he gives her a good look over and says to himself, damn, I tapped that ass?. ]-
Cody: I guess you look the same too seeing as I really dont remember you. Cori: Well it has been 4 years. Caroline: Mr. T-Man and me should let you two talk alone. Tomorrow Man: Um, yeah, good idea. Caroline: Ill show you around the house.
-[ Tomorrow Man looks at Cody as if he really doesnt want to go, but he knows that Cody deserves some time to speak with this woman alone. So being the good friend that Tomorrow Man is, he follows Caroline into the house. Cody and Cori just stand there wondering what to say. ]-
Cori: So, youve come a long way if you came from San Francisco. Cody: Yeah, but I like to travel. You know, with my job and all. Cori: Wrestling, right? Cody: Yes.
-[ They both go silent again because this is an awkward moment. But soon enough, Cody grows tired of this and wants to get down to business. ]-
Cody: So where did we meet? Cori: You seriously dont remember, do you? Cody: No, I dont. Cori: In Dallas. Milestones Tap Room. We met on the dance floor. Cody: Milestone? Hmm, sounds familiar.
-[ Cody starts to remember back when it was 1999. He and Tomorrow Man were in Dallas for a Tuesday Night Backdraft event in the Global Fantasy Wrestling Alliance. They decided after the event to go around town to explore the night life a bit, well Cody did but Tomorrow Man really wasnt interested. So they found this nice bar where there was a long line waiting to get inside because a hot local DJ was playing there. Cody and Tomorrow Man decided to use their pull in society and showed the bouncer their I.D.s that they worked for the GFWA. Just like that, they were allowed to cut past the line and go inside. ]-
-[ Inside the bar is a crowded room, obviously those people waiting outside arent going to get in tonight. Cody and Tomorrow Man walk through the wall to wall crowded bar, attempting to make their way towards the actual bar to get something to drink. On the way there, Cody catches a glimpse of a great looking girl in a short skimpy red dress dancing on the dance floor. He taps Tomorrow Man on the shoulder. ]-
Cody: You know what, I think Ill go over there a dance a bit. Tomorrow Man: All right. Ill be at the bar.
-[ Cody then starts to make his way towards the dance floor while Tomorrow Man pushes his way towards the bar. Cody gets another glimpse of the girl in red and he knows that hes going to bag her tonight. As he dances his way towards her, he comes up with a sly way of starting some conversation. Finally, he gets close enough to were he is dancing next to her. She turns around, he smiles, and she smiles back. ]-
Cody: Hey.
-[ Then she turns back around and starts to dance towards the other side of the room, ignoring him. Cody just stands there, dejected in the middle of the dance floor. Not every plan works apparently. Then from behind him he hears a female voice. ]-
Cori: Now that was smooth.
-[ Cody turns around and staring back at him, dancing, is a younger Cori-Lynn Matthews. Cody starts to dance with her a bit because he knows that he doesnt have a shot with the other chick; besides, hes too lazy to chase her all the way to the other side of the room. So he decides to introduce himself to Cori. ]-
Cody: Cody Carmichael. Professional wrestler. Cori: Cori-Lynn Matthews. Self-employed. Wrestler, eh? Cody: Yeah, I was in town doing a show. Cori: Sounds like fun. Cody: Self-employed? Cori: Yep. Cody: What do you do?
-[ Cori winks at him and starts to dance a little closer to him. ]-
Cori: Just my thang.
-[ Well, Cody and Cori hit it off pretty well on the dance floor due to them both having the same personality. As a matter of fact, they hit it off so well that they leave the dance floor together and head towards a restroom. Cori leads him into the mens bathroom and then into one of the stalls. Cody pushes her against the concrete wall and starts to feel up her skirt while he kisses her. She then starts to unbutton and unzip his pants to feel around while they kiss. ]-
Cody: I havent had the pleasure of doing it in a bathroom before. Cori: Oh, the pleasures all mine, hun.
-[ Cody reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his wallet. He reaches into one of the compartments and pulls out a condom. He opens the package up and prepares to put it on. One problem though, as he was going to put it on, he accidentally drops it into the toilet! ]-
Cody: Shit! Cori: What? Cody: My condom fell in the toilet!
-[ A guy washing his hands by the sink hears the whole thing and laughs at Cody. ]-
Cody: Shut the fuck up!
-[ Cori looks down in the toilet and cant help but laugh a little too. Sure enough, there it is, floating on top of the water. ]-
Cody: Crap, I cant use it now and I dont have another one! Cori: I dont have one either.
-[ Cori pulls up her skirt a little and slides her sky blue silk panties off and Cody just looks at her. ]-
Cody: What are you doing? Cori: Come on, dont tell me thats going to stop you!
-[ Cody knows he has to pass because that would be breaking one of his own rules. Never do a lady without protection. Cody shakes his head to deny her. ]-
Cori: Come on! Ill take care of it later.
-[ Cody cant believe that hes going to pass up the opportunity to have sex with this 19-year old cute Texan, so he decides that he cant pass it up. He hoists her up, enough to where she can grab onto the top of the stall walls so she has something to hang on to. As he recalls giving her the business, he comes back to reality, comprehending what went wrong that night. ]-
Cody: You didnt take care of it later, did you?
-[ Cori looks down at the gravel driveway, ashamed about what happened. ]-
Cori: I had a little too much to drink later that night and I forgot. The next day I took a pregnancy test and it came out positive. 9 months later, I had Samantha. Cody: How do you know shes mine? Cori: Cause you were the only person I had sex with that month.
-[ Cody shakes his head in disbelief. ]-
Cody: I still want to have the paternity test done. Cori: Just come look at her, Cody, and youll know shes yours! Cody: Fine, Ill meet her but I still want the test done. Cori: Ok, you meet her then well go into town to get the test done. Then youll know if you dont all ready after you see her. Shes yours, Cody! Cody: Take me to her. Cori: Come on.
-[ Cori leads Cody into the house and into the living room. Caroline and Tomorrow Man are there and shes showing him some family photos she has on the old fireplace. Tomorrow Man could care less. When he sees Cori leading Cody to the bedroom where Samantha is, he follows them. Cori opens the door and finds Samantha sitting in the middle of the room playing with some dolls. Cori turns back to Cody and whispers for him to wait. While Cody waits, Cori enters the room and smiles at her daughter. ]-
Cori: Samantha? Samantha: Yes, momma. Cori: Remember when you drew that picture of me, you, and Aunt Caroline? Samantha: Uh huh. Cori: And you asked why you didnt have a daddy? Samantha: Uh huh. Cori: Well Id like you to meet a very good friend of mine. His name is Cody. And he wants to be your daddy.
-[ Cody, still not positive that shes his daughter, shakes his head to himself because Cori is jumping the gun. Cori waves for him to come in, and he does. When he enters the room he sees little Samantha sitting in the center of the room, watching him. He likes the fact that shes a very cute little girl. Tomorrow Man quickly notices that she does have some of Codys features. Cody gets on his two knees and extends his hand to her. ]-
Cody: Nice to meet you Samantha. Samantha: Nice meet you Cody.
-[ Samantha then goes back to playing with her dolls again as Cody looks at Cori. ]-
Cori: Its okay.
-[ Cody looks at Samantha again and tries to get her attention. ]-
Cody: What are you playing there? Samantha: Barbies.
-[ Samantha hands Cody a naked Ken doll and Tomorrow Man chuckles to himself. He wishes he had a camera for this because hell never get a chance to see Cody playing with a naked Ken doll ever again. Cody, not knowing what to do, walks the Ken doll over to Samanthas Barbie. ]-
Cody: Hi, Im Ken
-[ Samantha laughs. ]-
Samantha: You not Ken! You Cody!
-[ Cori chuckles as Samantha brings her Barbie and another doll over to Codys Ken. ]-
Samantha: Me Samantha and dis my mommy. You marry so I have daddy.
-[ Cody looks at Cori and she looks back. Now she knows what she has to do. ]-
Cori: Samantha, go put your shoes on. Were going into town. Samantha: Aw! But I was playin. Cori: I know. You can bring your toys too. Samantha: Yay!
-[ Cody gives her the Ken doll back as she runs out the bedroom door to go get her shoes. Cody looks back at Tomorrow Man and then Cori. ]-
Cody: T-Man and I will wait outside while you get ready. Then well follow you into town. Cori: Well be out shortly.
-[ Cody walks past Tomorrow Man and Caroline and heads towards the front door. Tomorrow Man follows a few feet behind. Cody walks out the door and heads towards his truck as he takes his sunglasses off his hat visor and back in front of his eyes. Tomorrow Man looks behind him to see if anybody is following him. Once he sees no one is, he says something to Cody. ]-
Tomorrow Man: You were great back there with her. Cody: Get in the truck.
-[ Cody gets in the truck and closes the door. Tomorrow Man walks around the truck, not really sure why Cody seems to be in a pissed off mood, he then gets into the truck. ]-
Tomorrow Man: Whats wrong with you? Cody: How dare she say I want to be that kids father! Shit, we havent even taken the test yet! Tomorrow Man: Thats what were going to do now, right? Cody: Damn right, then when the test prove Im not the father we can leave! Tomorrow Man: What if the test comes back positive. Cody: Doesnt matter, were still going to Buffalo! Youve got a match! Tomorrow Man: Man, dont worry about business right now. Cody: Subject changed. Were talking about business now! Tomorrow Man: Fine. Cody: You better beat Sapphire or you arent a man anymore.
-[ Tomorrow Man laughs. ]-
Tomorrow Man: Oh yeah? Cody: Yeah. You lose to a girl, your manhood is stripped. And trust me, she likes to take away guys manhood. Just ask that cracker jack Big Poppa.
-[ Tomorrow Man laughs again. ]-
Tomorrow Man: We about through? Cody: You going to win? Tomorrow Man: Well, Sapphire is pretty tough for a woman Cody: are you going to win?! Tomorrow Man: All right! Yes Im going to win. There, happy?
-[ Just then, Cori, Samantha, and Caroline come out of the house and walk towards Carolines old beat up sky blue Oldsmobile. Cody starts the truck up and slowly follows the old junker as it leads them into town. ]-
Cody: Im getting there.
