Today I look at my toes. One is huge, and covered with the ugliest callouse anyone could imagine. It sticks out at the side. The one next to it is almost as long, but half the width. It sort of has a crick in the middle, like it's always bent upwards even if it's bent downwards. The middle one curves slightly towards the larger two. The second smallest also curves, but it has a strangeness to it. It is chubbier than the others. This toe has attitude. It could kick some serious behind. Now the little baby one... it is itty bitty. It has no attitude. It is short. Really short. And it has almost no nail to it. It is this short, stubby little apendage of bone, and even more chub. And almost no nail. It's crazy.
I look at my other toes. You know, the ones on the other foot. They look like a mirror image of the first set: calloused, fat, skinny, long, short, and stubby. And one with hardly any nail. These are my toes. They go with me everywhere I go. If they didn't I'd have a pretty hard time walking around. They are my support, part of my main mode of transportation - my feet.
And then I realize that my toes are like me. Different. Diverse. Crazy. Thick-skinned. My toes are me. I am my toes. And then I have another realization: my toes are like the world. Different. Diverse. Crazy. Thick-skinned. It's interesting how in so many ways they're different, but deep down they're all the same. Full of blood and bones and chub and stuff. And through their similarities, they work together. They have a common goal - to get me to where I want to go.
And then I think, if my toes are like the world, then maybe we, as a society, could find some common goals and work together towards them. And maybe if we all had common goals, we could forget about our differences and accept how diversity can lead up to success. My toes are all different, and yet they're all the same. They all have the same goal, and they all achieve it. I move around easily and efficiently.
If people got together and worked towards goals, they could also be achieved easily and efficiently. My toes don't hate each other. They depend on each other. Perhaps the world might someday be the same way.
