| The Orgy quintet is made up of Jay Gordon -vocals, Ryan Shuck -guitar, Amir Derakh -synth guitar, Paige Haley -bass and Bobby Hewitt -drums. When Jay and Ryan decided to start doing demos together that was the conception of Orgy. It was only a few months later that Orgy was ready to be the first band to sign onto Korn's Elementree label. They didn't want to lose their creativity by touring the club scene so instead decided to go straight into the studio and record their newly developed sound. All of the members of Orgy had been in the music industry for atleast 10 years so they were well aware of what was expected of them. Candyass was the final result from the studio. It was gloomy catchy pop metal, which later was named "death pop" by Paige. The sound was a creation by 5 very different characters writing music together. Candyass was on a league of its own, it was a totally new genre of music. Many music critics called the Orgy sound a watered down Marilyn Manson. Was it the make-up, the clothes or the look that made other critics call Orgy a gimmick? The first single was Stitches, which is the closest song that could reflect the overall sound of Candyass. Orgy got the opening slot on the first ever Family Values Tour of 1998. Korn headlined the tour and made sure that all the shows across America were sold out. Orgy had been noticed but it wasn't until the second single Blue Monday (originally done by New Order) got Orgy worldwide recognition. Candyass went Platinum in the USA.This got the sceptics now saying that Orgy was just another group of One Hit Wonders. Orgy toured Canada and the USA until it was time to to the follow-up album which was released in September 2000 called Vapor Transmission. The album wasn't given many good reviews, the critics seemed to dislike or ever hate some part of it. The title, the lack of gloom and doom that Candyass had and the more polished sound were the main things targeted. Orgy had more bad luck, as they weren't on tour when the album was released even after a few delays. It wasn't until a few months later that the tour started. Everything looked like it was on the upside as headlining shows were selling out. The once again more bad luck, Amir had gotten mono and that caused the remainder of the tour to be cancelled. The record company wasn't impressed with the lower than expected sales of Vapor Transmission so they declined Orgy a chance to finish the tour once Amir was healthy again. Orgy got told to return to the studio and record the next album even though it wasn't even a year since Vapor Transmission was released. |
