July 15 --  28, 2001 -- Fresno, California
Summer Arts Program - Mariachi Performance

Guest Artists

El Mariachi Imperial de Mexico
is an elite group of musicians led by Mario Rodriguez, who have collectively and individually performed with some of the greatest mariachis in the world and in prestigious locations such at the Hollywood Bowl. Their most recent CD release is Mariachi Mambo y Mas.

Course Description

Students will focus on the history and technique of mariachi performance to foster a better understanding of the development of mariachi culture and promote the maintenance of the tradition.

This class will provide the opportunity for students who are interested in mariachi performance to study with master teachers/ performers. The class schedule includes a lecture component to provide a socio-cultural history of the mariachi - its rural origins and urbanization, its emergence as Mexico's pre-eminent musical symbol, and its contemporary performance contexts.

Participants will work one-on-one with members of El Mariachi Imperial de Mexico, immersing themselves in the techniques related to the standard mariachi in voice and instruments - trumpet, violin, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron. Students will have the opportunity to learn and practice the techniques connected with the various genres that form the mariachi repertoire. Students will participate in public performances, aided by the master musicians of El Mariachi Imperial de Mexico. A major concert at which the students and teachers will perform will constitute the capstone activity for the class.

September 27, 28 and 29 -- Valley City, North Dakota
Fiesta Mexicana

Valley City will once again host Fiesta Mexicana, an exhibition of arts, crafts, dance, music, and foods from Mexico. The first Fiesta Mexicana held in 1999 was a resounding success, bringing in over 2,200 visitors in two days, including 1,200 students from several area schools.

This year's Fiesta, which will run September 27-29, promises to be even more exciting with more Mexican artisans from Oaxaca and La Paz, including a fourth-generation Oaxacan coffee grower, a glass blower from Mexico City, and a Guelagetza dance group from Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico.

Products such as alebrijes (small carved, painted animals), black pottery (unique to Oaxaca), blown glass, cotton textiles, tin art, as well as wool weavings, will be for sale. Regional dances and typical food will again be part of the event. All products are hand-crafted by skilled artisans, and many make use of natural dyes and other materials. One of the goals of the event is to encourage retail import activities in both directions. Other goals include exposure of the culture to area residents.

The artists, dancers, and products are from Oaxaca and La Paz, Mexico, cities that have universities that exchange students and faculty members with Valley City State University. Mexican state trade ministries, economic development groups, and artisan councils are sponsoring participation in the fiesta. Oaxaca and La Paz are similar in many ways to North Dakota, relatively sparsely populated and heavily dependent on an agricultural economy.

The hours for the Fiesta are Thursday and Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Local sponsors include Valley City State University, the city of Valley City, and the Valley City Chamber of Commerce

Danzantes Unidos 2002
hosted by RAICES Grupo Folklorico

The Sacramento festival will feature 10 different folklorico movement classes including: Tamaulipas, Oxaca, Michoacan, Yucatan, Tabasco, Chiapas, Puebla, Chihuahua, Veracruz and Jalisco.  Classes will be assigned by  levels Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced. We ask that group directors assist their dancers in finding the level most appropriate for them. Specialty courses will be offered in Afro-Cuban, Latino Social Dance, and Choreography/Stagecraft. These specialty classes will only be held with enough dancers enrollment to sustain them.

Registering for classes in Sacramento will be different from previous Festivals.  Prior DUF’s have faced severe problems with class size, logistics, and teacher to pupil instruction time. To solve this problem in 2002,

  • early registration will be due by January 11, 2002 at $40.00
  • regular registration, from January 12-February 8 at $55.00
  • late registration will close on February 22, 2002 at  $65.00.

There will be "No On Site Registration" for workshops at the Sacramento 2002  DUF.
