In this thesis, the anatomy of the face and its aesthetic components, the etiology of oral and
facial defects and different techniques used for their reconstruction were reviewed.
In addition, seventy five patients with different orofacial tumors where included in the present
thesis. The patient where divided into five groups according to the sites of the defect in relation
to the aesthetic units of the face. These groups are namely: oral and perioral region (34 cases),
cheek region (14 cases), forehead region (12 cases), nasal region (12 cases) and Periorbital
region (3 cases).
Different techniques were used for reconstruction of these defects, including: split-thickness graft
and full-thickness graftlocal and regional flaps, distant flaps as deltopectoral flap.
The aesthetic and functional results were evaluated by photographing by us and also by the patients
through a questionnaires, They were rated excellent, good and bad in relation to the primary lesion.
The overall aesthetic and functional results were excellent in 72% and good 28% of the cases.
The conclusion is that local and regional flaps are the ideal method for reconstruction of facial defects
because of the excellent color and texture match.
However, they can only be used in reconstruction of small to moderate sized defects.
Distant flaps have to be the option if local and regional flaps couldnt reconstruct the defect.
Split skin grafts proved to be an easy, simple and fast technique of reconstruction.
However the aesthetic results are usually unsatisfactory. Full thickness grafts gives excellent results in
selective patients.
