The Search for the Holy Coconut
Plot Summary
Set in present day Toronto, the Sea Monkies set off to find the holy coconut which will give them international security, peace, justice, for the entire world. They first start off by treking to a winter field. After finding no coconuts, they return back home. There, they wait for the word from Regis Philman about the location of the coconut. Quickly they ride off on their bikes to the coconut. Shortly after, they arrive at a cliff. They look for the coconut and see it in the distance. "The Dryx" is chosen to get the coconut, and he walks over to pick it up. However, once he picked it up, a beast which inhabited the coconut emerges. After sorting out the confusion, and misunderstanding, the Raptor joins them on their quest.
The group returns home to get a call from Fox Television Network. Fox tells them that the coconut is in a river. They quickly set off, fearing that the water will wash the coconut away. Once they arrive, "Loose Nuts" attempts to get the coconut. In the process, however, the water rushes him, the coconut, and the rest of the group down river. Luckily the group find a bath tub and uses it to get back to civilization.
The third phone call they recieve is from Britney Spears. She tells them that the coconut is located in a large field. Shortly after recieving the phone call, the group is in the field, and they spot the coconut. However, no one wants to walk to get it. They were all lucky because just as they started to leave, different objects fall onto the coconut, crushing it.
The group get home sad. Suddenly, "Loose Nuts" gets and idea. He goes out and returns with a coconut. He tells the group that he bought it from Lablaws for $1.99. Everyone is then happy and they throw a party. - The End
Project History
This project took nearly 3 months to complete. We were given the contest information in late January. As many films, we started off with a rough story board. The original story followed very close to the above plot summary, but we had to cut out a "Temptation Island" scene due to technical difficulties and time restrictions. Anyways, after the story board came the script. We cheated abit by writing it in English, then translating it into Ukrainian. By the end of the 1st month of work, we had already had the script and storyboard.
The next task was to decide how to create the actuall film. At a Plast meeting, "The Dryx" brought up the idea of using a green screen for the back grounds. Then, during editing, we would be able to take out the background colour and replace it on the computer with a background scene. This worked perfect with what we wanted to do. In addition, "The Dryx" also had some 3D animation software which was used to add some special effects to the film.
After 1.5 months, we were set for filming. We took a full day to shoot every scne with the green screen. It looked good, but when the editing came around, a major error occurred. Because of the uniform's colour, the computer started to remove some of the uniforms along with the background. In order to fix this, we re-filmed all the scenes. After re-filming, we filmed all the scenes which we needed to film in the basement of one of the member's homes. After filming finished there, we were able to edit the film. Editing took nearly 5 full days. The finished product look good for n amateur film. We were ready to submit it on the Wednesday of March 21st, 2001, but the organizers had postponed the date to hand in the film, for about another 2 weeks. Although we were angry at this, we took advantage of the time and fixed many mistakes. The finished product was then put onto video cassette and also onto CD.
When the film screening came around, we learned of the true popularity of the the film festival at Plast Toronto. 11 groups submitted a film. Due to the 2 hour period designated for the films, the organizers were only able to show the top 5 films. Our group made it easily into the top 5. However, our luck ran out when the top prizes were announced. We won 4th place. We were discouraged at first, but recovered quickly. We realized that although our script was not the best one there, we out did the nearest competitor in regards to technical merit and skill ten fold. We really enjoyed the competition. Although we did not win 1st or even 2nd, we realize that the lack of logic can corrupt any system. To us, our 4th feels like 1st place.
Goal!!!!! We were hockey addicts in the movie (and sort of are in real life).
The tub scene prior to editing. Notice the green screen.
Special thanks to Lava Computers for their technical support, especially for their firewire card!
