Questions & Answers
What ... Masters?
A Toastmasters Club is a SPEECH CLUB, where members help each other to learn the arts of public speaking by practice. Member achievements are recognized by Toastmasters International and many other businesses organizations.
How does it work?
At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical club is made up of 20 - 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice.
How are meetings conducted?
A club meeting usually begins with a short business session which helps members learn the meeting procedures. Then the meeting transitions into other "segments" such Prepared Speeches, Table Topics, and Evaluations.
What are Table Topics?
Table Topics are impromptu "mini-speeches" where the Table Topics Master assigns a few topics, and members are called upon to deliver the speeches without prior preparation. This segment is intended to practice "off-the-cuff" speaking skills.
"Prepared Speech"?
"Required Speeches" toward most certificates are those specified in the Toastmasters Manuals. Manual speeches have clearly stated objectives toward particular skill areas, such as voice, language, gestures and persuasion.
How are speeches evaluated?
Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out the speech strength and offers suggestions for improvement. These specific feedback is one of the most important means for members to support and help each other on their speaking skills.
What about leadership skills?
Leadership takes practice. In Toastmasters members build leadership skills by organizing meeting, conducting meetings, and motivate others to help. Just as members learn to speak by speaking, they learn to lead by leading.
What tools are available?
Member receive a variety of manuals and resources on speaking. They also receive a monthly magazine, 'The Toastmaster', that offers the latest insights on speaking and leadership techniques.
Who have been Toastmasters?
There have been quite a few famous Toastmasters in history. Here is a sample list of well known individuals from the Toastmasters "hall of fame".
How much does it cost?
Membership dues are usually 6-7 dollars a month, paid in two installments each year. New members also pay a one-time processing fee of $20 which covers a "New member kit" from Toastmasters International. The entire organization is volunteer based and nobody profits from the membership dues.
