sports fans

Plano is a very youth-sports-minded community. Sports opportunities begin just about the time a child can walk and run. Team sports begin at ages 3 or 4. Whatever the age of your children, there should be a sport available for them!

Finding the right sport for your child, schedule and budget are the challenges. The focus here will be providing resources to help you in your search.

If you have browsed through this website, you may not be surprised at all to find that Plano Parks and Rec offers some sport classes. These classes may be a good introduction to try out a few sports and learn the basics in the meantime.

Private organizations offer team and participation sports. Here is a list of some available in Plano:

When contacting the various organizations, find out this information:

  1. When does registration period for this sport begin/end?
  2. When do the practices and games begin/end?
  3. What uniforms and equipment are required for this sport?
  4. Are players assigned at random on a team or is there an evaluation and placement?

Uniforms & Equipment

Find out what uniform components, if any, are provided in the fee. Some organizations leave all uniforms up to the team and some provide some type of uniforms. If your organization provides no uniform, it is important for you to know that the team will collectively agree on a uniform, but it is typically the recommendation of the coach or a team parent. The uniforms that are chosen are usually of good quality from sports equipment stores and will have team names and numbers heat-set on them. Don't be surprised if the uniform alone costs between $25-30. Have you chosen a sport that requires cleats, such as soccer? Don't forget that new shoes will be part of the package. After all fees have been paid and uniforms have been acquired, your total investment for a modest sport requiring no special equipment can be $90.

Some local sports resources for uniforms and equipment are: Play It Again Sports, Plano Sports and the newer Academy Sports.  If you like an upscale sports environment, check out Galyan's at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco.  They also have a rock-climbing wall (it's a fun place to shop).
