Once again, Planet X returned to the one of our favorite venues -- The Roadhouse in Rio Linda.
Opening this show was Kattywompus, who were just breaking in their new guitarist, Brian - formerly a member of the local band Sycamore Green. They had only had a few weeks reheasal with Brian, but still manage to put on an amazingly energetic show, and had the crowd up and out on the dance floor after just two tunes. A lot of the songs they played were unfamiliar to me, although they included many of their stalwarts, "Mustang", "Bleed Me" and "Want the Funk".
We were second up, and did pretty well. Jeff Prince from Roys Love Virus came out for the show, after we'd had several online discussions on the Sactolist.
Once again, we had tuning problems with Sammy's guitar. Only this time it was with his Ibanez (which is tuned to D), instead of the Epiphone which is tuned to "C" for most of our songs. We struggled with it for a while, then played an impromptu jam song based on a riff that Darryl's been messing around with for some time - while I made up a melody for it on the fly. Eventually we decided to skip all the 3 of our "D" songs and just keep working with the guitars that were behaving properly. It wasn't nearly as bad as our last show at the Hogshead, so that's progress.
I myself, had a great time on the Roadhouse's stage. It's big and comfortable - plus it's carpeted which means it doesn't hurt to jump up and down on it. And I do a lot of jumping up and down. During their set, Chris of Kattywompus had broken a glass on stage -- I don't know how he did that on carpet -- but I made sure to clean it up before we started, because that allowed me not only to jump up and down without worrry - I was able to even do some somersaults and rolls. That stage is pretty cool.
We got a lot of comments after the show about the impromptu song. People were pretty impressed that we could improvise like that in the face of equipment failures.
Brand X Savior came on last. A lot of the crowd had thinned by that point - which is a shame, they're one hellava band. I've been listening to some of their tracks on MP3.com. Particularly the song "A Part of Me". They a very strong Tool influence to their work, but some great vocals by Jason and drumming by Ernie. Brand X Savior has been around for awhile, but they had taken some time off after the death of Jason's dad, it's good to see them back in the swing of things again. They played very well.
All in all this was one of the best bills and shows we've had to date. It was a lot of fun.
