Planet X Video Shoot - Day 3 (Editing)

So we reviewed the final tape from Day 2 of the video shoot expecting that it would sound as good and look better than Day 1.

    Nope.

Oh, it looked good alright - it was far more subdued and although we did use swirling lights and even smoke, we had positioned them better so they we're as much of a distraction. But the sound...well, the sound was distorted. It had all been recorded a little too hot onto the VCR.

    DOH!

Ok, so Darryl figured he might be able to salvage things using an EQ to drop out some of the excessive low range on the tape. But he needed two stereo VCR's and a mixer.

His VCR's at home didn't work. Rob wasn't going to be again available before the deadline date. My VCR was mono.

It took some hunting, but he eventually found somebody whose girlfriend had a stereo VCR at her house. All they had to do was wait for her to get home from work.

    And wait...

    And wait some more...

About midnight on Sunday (the tapes were due monday), they finally started on the editing. Ultimately they found that they really couldn't clean up the sound from DAY 2 all that much, it was still distorted and you couldn't hear on the words clearly. I mean it was probably ok for casual viewing, but this is a contest and we needed to have the best that we could have. So they wen't to work on the video from DAY 1 - (y'know, the acid trip one?) - and used the mixer to sweeten the sound on that a bit.

Darryl had also talked to someone involved in the contest about the 2 minute limit, and she basically said it wasn't being strickly enforced and if you wanted to put an entire song on - you could.

As a result the final tape was 6 minutes long using most of the song "Harden" and sections from "Not Like U" and "Wannabe?".

    Whew.

Not bad for three days work, I don't even care if we win this contest - I'm just glad it's done. Still this I expect is probably just a fraction of the level of mind-numbing boredom. frustration and irritation we're likely to deal with in a "professional" video shoot.

Chalk it up to "experience" - I say.
