But The Smiths always sung about you, the listener, hitting their targets both lyrically and musically with unwavering accuracy. Simon Goddard's exploration of their music, Songs That Saved Your Life (though sometimes authoritative in its interpretations of specific lyrics it remains a fascinating and engrossing read) is thoroughly recommended.
