SNOW PATROL - CHOCOLATE
Slightly more memorable than Run, and a more than competent effort. Nice video too, where people are petrified thinking the world's going to end when the countdown is merely to the end of the song. The dumb ('trucks' - Ed). ***

FRANZ FERDINAND - MATINEE
More quirk rock from the unlikely-haired ones, picking up where
Take Me Out left off, but here's hoping they deviate from their musical formula quickly before it all becomes too repetitive. ***

RONAN KEATING & LEANN RIMES - LAST THING ON MY MIND
I'm not gonna lay into this, because it's not particularly bad. Pop with an efficient orchestral backdrop, which reminds me of Ben Lee
How To Survive A Broken Heart, perversely. And Rimes looks cute in the video. This isn't very objective, is it? ***

PRINCE - MUSICOLOGY
This is what they call 'funk', I believe, apparently Prince invented it. And it's scrappy, toe-tappy. That means it's alright. ***

THE BETA BAND - ASSESSMENT
Easily a
Single Of The Month. It's always a pleasure when you hear Someone Who Knows What They're Doing and Mason has fast become master of his art. It opens unauspiciously enough, but then an insidious bassline hits your ears, the net result being more an intense aural journey than a song. Impeccable. ****

MAROON 5 - THIS LOVE
You'll listen to this first time and think "It's okay, but I'll never remember this". Then you'll be doing the washing up later and start humming it and wonder how on earth it managed to get in your head. Funny, some tracks. ***

STRANGLERS - LONG BLACK VEIL
Ooh, now we're going back. Decent enough on its own terms, but too workmanlike and uninspiring to warrant further listening. Shame. ***

MORRISSEY - IRISH BLOOD, ENGLISH HEART
You probably won't hear this on the radio, the British (English?) media having distanced themselves from Steven ages ago. He hasn't lost any of his accusatory bitterness in the meantime, but while the vocal is flawless, the music's not quite there, a bit indie-schmindie. And he's releasing his new album on one of these new-fangled DVDs? How unutterably
vulgar. ***

D12 - MY BAND
Eminem and cohorts in full-on comedy mode. They may dress up and make humorous videos but they can still make an astute point, this time about fan's fickleness in differentiating between musician and star. ***

BEN TAYLOR BAND - DAY AFTER DAY
Pleasant keyboardy knockabout, Ben Folds or Brendan Benson style. Take your pick. ***
