| 1 Make a conscious decision that each day you will do at least one thing that is environmentally friendly. This may be something easy and small such as making sure that you bin any litter you find on your street. 2 Adopt an attitude that even small differences make a difference. 3 Re-use, recycle, re-evaluate - do you need it? 4 Don't litter. Wherever you go always place your rubbish into a refuse bin or, if there isn't any, take it home with you and dispose of it there. 5 Wherever possible carry items in re-useable bags. Ask stores to remove excess packaging on items before you leave the store. 6 Dispose of items carefully. Sort rubbish in your home into biodegradable food scraps and utilise a compost bin in your garden. Sort paper and cardboard and bottles, cans and plastics for -recycling. Lobby your local municipal board or council to institute re-cycling of wastes. 7 Check your car's tyre pressure. Correct tyre pressure prevents damage to your tyres and suspension AND importantly, saves petrol also. 8 Switch off lights and equipment when not in use. The less electricity you use, the less pollution will occur from power stations AND you save money. 9 Return all junk mail to the sender, writing a clear message on it that you support, economical usage of paper resources and request your name be removed from their mailing list or distribution system. 10 Make sure your taps (faucets) don't drip. A dripping tap can waste water at upto 9 litres a minute. You will conserve water AND save money if you repair dripping taps or faucets. 11 Always wait for a full load of laundry before using your washing machine. This saves water, lessens the impact of laundry detergents AND saves you money. 12 If your fridge is set too cold and many are 5% cooler than they need be, then its using 25% more electricity. Check it. 13 Cars are polluters. Limit the use of the car through car-pooling. Take turns to fetch children from school, music or sports, or driving to work. 14 In preference to using your car, walk if its a short distance, or use public transport such as trains, buses, light rail systems or trams. 15 Ensure your toilet has a dual flush. Half a flush for urine and a full flush for solid body wastes. In any event, most toilets hold enough water in a half-flush capacity to effectively flush most waste. If you have an older style toilet-cistern, place a brick in the cistern to decrease its holding capacity. 16 Use cloth towels in your kitchen instead of paper towels. They can be re-used after washing. Paper towelling not only uses trees but also depends on chemical processing that is then disposed into the environment. 17 Ensure your house is appropriately insulated. Heat loss in winter means greater use of heating, more energy use AND more expense for you 18 Plant a tree. Trees provide shade and filter carbon dioxide in the air. Seek information from your local gardening centre about what sort of trees are most suitable for your area and its soil type. Trees that attractive native birds are desirable. 19 At the office, use a mug instead of disposable paper or polystyrene cup. 20 Ensure your house in summer has appropriate shading - trees outside and/or tinted glass, venetian blinds or curtains at the windows. This will reduce the heat inside and save on airconditioning or fan bills, energy AND money. 21 Use unleaded petrol wherever possible and keep the air clean. 22 Spread the "Environmental GO GREEN" message. Talk to your friends about ways you can all assist in being environmentally friendly in your school, college, office, workplace and at your home. 23 Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Vinegar for example is an excellent disinfectant for bench tops etc and for cleaning windows. In any event check labels on cleaning products and determine if they are environmentally friendly. 24 Wherever possible use electronic mail instead of paper. This saves trees and lessens the chemicals used in paper manufacturing. 25 In summertime, water gardens at dusk or early evening to reduce water evaporation. Plants appear to prefer water at this time anyway, rather than in the heat of the day. |
