the solitary tree

In the midst of the bare earth
There stands forlonely
A solitary tree
A sign of a sin, a wicked deed
A portrait of lust, of human greed
A lonely victim of man's innate desire to breed

The tree was once a member of a colony
A place where life was young and free
A mecca for the birds and buzzing bees
Where the woodpecker could chip away in peace
The tiger could roar away as it pleased
The monkeys could fight with the chimpanzees
The winner, hanging from a vine, a smile playing at his lips

Once awash with Noah's own fleet
Now a haven of plunderers and thieves
Roaring in on their lorries of vice
Pulling out their saws, their murderers in disguise
Wiping everything out from the elephant to the mice
Giving nary a damn about the harmony of life

What do they care about the pain of a falling tree?
Which of them, like every being, does not crave for some privacy?
When will they realise that we
The last survivors of a harsh galaxy
Have to rely on, actually need
The pine and the weed, the flower and the seed?

Let us make peace with Nature, our mother
Let this planet belong to all our fellow creatures
Let us lead God's creations with wisdom forever
