The Malnevian Dragon
The malnevian dragon has lived on Malnev for thousands of years, cooperating with and protecting the native people and animals from whatever threats may arise.  Especially the swarms of giant, carniverous insects that plagued the islands every few decades.  The dragons would fight the insects, almost totally wiping them out, except that they could never find the nests to exterminate them completely.  So they had to continually fight.
Over the centuries, the insect hordes gradually grew stronger, and the dragons began to lose more of their numbers in every battle.  While they were losing more and more dragons, fewer were being hatched, as the young to middle age males, the primary mating choices for the females, were the earliest to fall.  Approximately a century ago, a group of unrelated hatchlings, along with a handful of elder females, and two older males were sent out, to find a place they could grow and possibly build their numbers.  The group hasn't been heard from since, and the dragons numbers continued to fall.
Finally, about twenty years ago, the dragons discovered the nest of the insects.  The heads of the different clans gathered all the remaining dragons, leaving one male and one female behind, and launched an all out attack on the hive.  After fierce battling, they finally destroyed the nesting area and the queen, as well as every male and drone in they found.  However, they took enormous casualties as well.  In the end, only one dragon made it back to the safe haven set up by the now sole-remaining male on the planet.  He told the pair what had happened, the casualties, and the victory, shallow victory that it was.  Shortly afterward, he died from the massive injuries he had recieved.
Since the male, named Stormar, and the female, named Malakira, were very young, too young to breed, they decided to split up.  Stormar, now calling himself simply "Storm", stayed at the haven, and Malakia went to the main island in the chain, to help protect the center of government.  They agreed to meet once a year to discuss anything that happened in the areas, especially any rumors of the insects returning.  After a few years, it became obvious that Malakira had a defect that made it impossible to for her to clutch, and that the two of them would be the last of their kind.  Malakira became very depressed, and began to search the world for any trace of the insects that had destroyed her people.  Every year, when it came time for their meeting, she would be later than the year before, and she looked haggard and gaunt.
This year, when Storm arrived at the meeting place, there was no sign of his friend.  He waited two weeks, longer than she had ever made him wait before, and finally, sadly, concluded that she must have fallen to something.  He decided that since he didn't know what had taken her down, it would be best to prepare for the worst; the possibility thatthe insects were back.  It was solely his job to protect the natives, but he knew if the bugs were back, he would need help to defend against them.
So, he went back to one of his favorite hobbies, something he had been doing during the years of not having much else to do; stretching his senses, especially his telepathic ability, as far as he could, searching for any other dragons in the universe.  When he found them, he "eavesdropped" on some of them, and taught himself how to teleport.  He also learned of many different places that had dragons for "bonding".
His kind had considered doing this as a whole, since they had the ability, but most decided it wasn't for them.  In the distant past, quite a few had chosen to bond with some of the the native people, but more recently, most had decided it would be a drawback when fighting bugs to have a bond to worry about.  After listening in to some of these other races of dragons,  Storm thought that having a bond might have had the opposite effect, and more of the malnevians would still be alive.  He called on a friend, to get a few 'test' candidates together, and send them offworld, to try to bond, and maybe bring dragons back to Malnev.
