How to Tell Them Apart

Several people asked how to tell the new versus old style rear wheel bearings apart. So, rather than try to explain it all, I thought I should post some pics and make it clear. Now, I realize that some people that sell these bearings may think I am trying to steer business away from them. However, since the failure of one part has proven the design to be incapable of the loading we put it through, this is a SAFETY issue and I feel very justified. If you feel that I am trying to intentionally do harm to your business, please feel free to e-mail me and I will gladly discuss this with you.

Onto the pictures!

The old OEM style (with the ball bearings) can be identified because the center section where the wheel mounts has, what would appear to me to be, a one way slotted screw head.(Pic is Below)

The new design (with the tapered roller bearings) can be identified by the cast cup in the center. It is similar to a bowl with a very rough surface. Also, the faces are usually stamped with a date code and "00-53" (at least, on the two that I have seen). (Pic is Below)

I hope this clears things up. We will be trying to work with the suppliers to make the new design better, but, as with everything, this will take time (design changes and testing need to be done). So, please be patient and we'll see what can happen! 1
