I Wish I Were A Flounder

I wish I were a flounder

The very flattest fish

With eyes protruding

From the top side of my head

Like slowly blinking berries.

Then when The Bogeyman came stalking

I’d flap my fins

My tail

My belly

And cover me with gritty bottom sand

And hide more of me

Than any ostrich ever could.

With just my eyes

Above the silt

Like bulbous periscopes

I’d hide and wait;

I’d bide right still

Until the Bogeyman

Strode past.
