Matchbox 20

[note:this article was taken from an article from launch.com]

Though he lists Van Morrison, Elvis Costello and Al Green among his musical favorites, Matchbox 20's singer-songwriter Rob Thomas plays music cut from a different cloth. While Thomas certainly expresses his inner rage and soul's discontent throughout the band's single "Push," his band works a far meatier spectrum akin to the grunge bands of previous years (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana) with a catchier attack. One wouldn't be surprised to hear Thomas fronting a very different band in a few years, but for now Matchbox 20 have struck quite a nerve at a time when not much else is.
A young group, Matchbox 20 were formed after Thomas had played in a series of high school bands. He met drummer Paul Doucette and bassist Brian Yale and after a few uneventful years learning their craft and touring locally, they found guitarist Adam Gaynor, who had been working at Criteria Recording in Miami, and guitarist Kyle Cook, who had been attending the Atlanta Institute Of Music.
The band took their Southern voice to producer Matt Serletic, who had had great success with Collective Soul. The band's demos caught the ear of Lava/ Atlantic records and they immediately went back into the studio with Serletic and cut their debut album, Yourself Or Someone Like You. The rest, as they say, is history.
