And for all you non-otaku reading this and wondering what all of those funny-looking words mean, here is a quick reference:
| Literally "girls' love," translated from Japanese. Shoujo-ai refers to any girl-girl relationship in anime/manga/art. It's all about the romance; shoujo-ai leaves you with feelings of love, and is not meant to be pornographic. | |
| "Lily," so named for the number of lesbian anime characters with that name. Yuri is more adult-oriented than shoujo-ai, but just as good if done tastefully. |
| The male counterpart of shoujo-ai, which as you've probably guessed means "boys' love." Same idea, only it's guys. |
| Yaoi is to men as yuri is to women. However, yaoi tends to have less story than yuri; the word itself is an acronym that means something like "no plot, no climax, no reason." The English equivalent of the word is Slash. |
| Literally "strange body," hentai is used to describe pornographic material, where the theme is more sex than love. Any hentai that is submitted to me will promptly be deleted. "Ecchi" is hentai's less hardcore counterpart. It stands for the Japanese letter H and usually denotes softcore. | |
| An avid fan of anime/manga. You don't have to be Japanese, just be into it. Signs that you're an otaku include: manga scrolls on your bedroom walls, e-bay orders for subbed and dubbed anime, and not needing to use this guide to make sense of what I wrote above it. |
