PRESS RELEASE

Singapore Malay National Organisation ( SMNO ) is concern with the current development where issues related to the Singapore Malay Muslim Community to be the focus and talking point even though it is notifiable that their efforts have been made to improve the confident level for national integration .

SMNO does not condone any orientation towards extremism and violence . Group with such ideology is perceived as being influence with emotional attachment from external forces . The Muslims take the Holy Quran as a guidance , the more pious and knowledgeable they are , the more tolerance and wiser they become . Islam does not categories or segregate into classes for its followers but identify all Muslims as one standard entity .

Singapore Islamic Religious Council ( MUIS ) has to clarify and explain in depth as this could prevent confusion among the communities in measuring the perception on moderate Muslims . Muslim Community in Singapore from the past have been applying moderation all this while and it has not change till today . It is wise for the Singapore Prime Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong to be well informed in his statement if it touches on religious issues in Singapore especially in religion that he is not a member .

PKMS stand on the Madrasah is that it has to be maintained and the current management system has to be at a status quo . Any policy changes have to be accepted by the Muslim Community before the year 2003 .

Madrasah students also contribute to the development of Singapore similar with the students from the national school . If the quality of the Madrasah has not attain to the standard required , it has to be assisted by the Singapore Government so as the Madrasah can be uplifted to the standard similar with the national school .

Touching on tudung issue , SMNO demand that the Government allow Muslim children to wear tudung in national school . The wearing of tudung does not identify whether the wearer is an extreme or moderate and it does not jeopardize the interaction with other races and religions . It is the responsibilty and the right of the Muslimahs to wear tudung and the Singapore Government has to accept this in order not to be seen that this Governement is suppressing the Singapore Malay Muslim Community .

SMNO support any efforts and dedication from various establishments in uplifting the education performance of the Singapore Malay students . With this , SMNO insist that the Singapore Government has to take charge and be responsible to the well being of the Malay students in their education that is in line with the Constitution of Singapore . Thus , the proposed Education Trust Fund that has been announced recently serve only to add on the burden for the Malay Muslim Community in Singapore .
