| 04th January 2003 Editor , Mass Media Political Desk PRESS RELEASE MOE SHOULD PERMIT MUSLIM CHILDREN TO WEAR HEADSCARVES Mr Azhar Ali ' s daughter has reached puberty . Both Mr Azhar Ali , a PKMS official , and his wife believe that at this age their daughter needs to comply with the religious obligation of wearing a tudung and ensuring that the body is covered except for the hands and face . Last year , the Government had been urging Singaporeans to practice religious tolerance and the permitting of the wearing of the tudung needs to be apart of this approach . Examples of the Government ' s encouragement of greater tolerance has included the arranging by CCCS and other grass roots organisations to visit Hindu Temples and Mosques . On the basis of religious tolerance and to reach religious tolerance first hand to our children the MOE should permit Muslim children to wear the tudung .
