CHICAGO YOUTH PROGRAMS
I was a volunteer this year for one of the Chicago Youth Programs tutoring programs for children living in the Cabrini Green Housing Project. The organization provides after-school tutoring for lots of at-risk kids, from pre-school all the way through high school. The students commit to one of various programs, suited to their needs, and work with volunteers on a one-on-one basis, usually here at the Northwestern downtown Chicago campus.
This year, however, CYP started the Burling On-Site Tutoring Program for children who, for various reasons, could not enroll in one of the programs that brought them to Northwestern every week. So the program recruited volunteers (mostly Northwestern med and law students) to go out to Cabrini Green instead, to tutor children there.
I had an *awesome* experience with the Burling program this year. It was eye-opening in lots of ways. Profoundly exciting and inspiring at times, heartbreaking at others. Always making me consider the blessings I have and the responsibility I have to share such things with others. I can't do it justice here and now - it'll be a story for another time (when I have more time, that is). If you can't wait to hear more, let me know.
Still, I wanted to share some pictures of our last evening of tutoring with the students for this year...
