Schielandtoren - Failed infiltration

This appartment building was erected in 1996. It is 101 meters high (some sources say 103). I don't know exactly how many floors it has, I guess about 40.

In this area of Rotterdam buildings cannot grow much higher than 100 meters because the microwave beam of the Dutch PTT (30 meters in diameter) passes this site at 106 meters. The beam connects the Waalhaven/Rotterdam with Alphen a/d Rijn.

Saturday 5 December 1998 - I tried to get into this appartment building because it must have a terrific view of the city. I should have been warned by the doorbell-camera. If you ring, the inhabitants can take a look at you through closed circuit television before they let you in.

I hung around a bit trying to get an opportunity to tail some people and to slip inside. I was viewed with suspicion by some elderly aristocratic ladies and had a nice conversation with a young english lady. She told me the view was perfect on the higher floors, but that you could only get a view from the appartments. There were no windows in the fire-escape stairs or in the elevators.

( I think this isn't exactly right. Looking up at the building from the parking garage at the back I can see tiny windows in the back wall. Enough to take a picture through. )

While standing in the hall and taking notes I was suddenly approached by two guards from the VNV (The United Dutch Security Firms). They looked very official with their uniforms, emblems and sheepskin collars. I was completely taken off-guard, so I had no good story ready. So I just stammered something and left sheepishly. They told me they had seen me on a camera in the hall; I hadn't noticed it. Shame on me.

Next time I'll look out better for camera's and I've a good cover story now. I'm a journalist writing an article about high-rise buildings in Rotterdam!

Why are rich people so suspicious? Do they have a bad conscience?
