Highway crossing - Terbregseplein

The "Terbregseplein" is the crossing between the A20 and the A16. The A20 runs East-West from Hoek van Holland over Rotterdam to Germany. The A16 runs North-South from Rotterdam to Belgium.

You have to climb fences to get near the highway. It took me a long time to find an easy and inconspicuous entry. My first route was along the "Terbregsepad" following the high bank of the highway, through high weeds and bushes.

Then under the A16. From this bridge you have a great view of the railroad tracks. There are few plants in the shadow under the viaduct and the only tree that seems to prosper here is the "common elder".

Walking under the concrete platforms I found the skeleton of a duck. The connection of the dark beak and the light neck-bones looked very alien. The overall feeling was that of Roman ruins under the summer sun (9 August 1998).

Racist graffiti: "get lost stupid n......", "our own people first". Neutral tags: WIP, SOP, CARD, FOOL, The graffiti CRWD, UP, ASK!, CHEC, MOB, DMK, SKER, DEEP, RAK, CONS, ROX.

Where the A16 passes under the railroad tracks there are two small pumping stations. You can lift up the covers and look inside: clear water, ground-water level.

Sunday 8 November - It has been raining for several days now. You get so worn down by this weather: rain, rain, rain, rain, rain, rain. In October we already had scored the wettest year in the century. And the year is not even finished yet! Who says we don't get a climate change?

Suddenly I couldn't stand it anymore and I put on my rain-coat and my rain-trousers (yes indeed) and went out exploring the Terbregseplein in the rain. I had been there before in the summer and wanted to see some spots I hadn't visited then.
Romantic, sitting (dry) under one of the highway bridges and hearing the cars go "thump" overhead. I counted the "thumps": 32 in one minute. Looking out over a (yet) unused junction in the A20. Delicate thin grass, like you see in the woods. An old maple and birch growing in a forgotten corner.

The A20 crossing the A16. Dark rainy weather. Under the fly-over it's even darker, had to use 1/4 second exposure time.

I found a tiny lake in the middle of a "wild" bush. Young trees that had been cut down were lying around and interesting, almost transparent, fungi were growing on them. Still you can find 13 species of plants that still have flowers and that are hanging on. But these are in the minority. Overall, nature is closing down for the winter. Dry twigs and black stalks are in the majority.
