This is the view from the 14th floor. The atmosphere is gray, because I took this picture at 19:46 on 17 September 1998. It was drizzling and it was getting dark already. Notice the lights of the ships. I had to use a long exposure to get any picture at all.
You are looking West over the river "Lek", upstream (in the direction of Germany, but that is 200km distant.)
Behind your back the rivers "Lek" and "Hollandsche IJssel" merge to form the river "Nieuwe Maas" that flows to the sea.
On the left is the wharf of "Van der Giessen - De Noord". It is situated in the "Stormpolder" in Krimpen aan den IJssel.
What looks like a split in the river (in the distance) is only the island of the "Grote Zaag" and "Kleine Zaag" (Big and Small Sawmill). There is indeed a sawmill there, and your heart bleeds when you see the large, old, tropical trees that lie around there. There is also a very high transmission line tower that I would like to climb some day, but I don't dare to.
I got in by tailing a kind young woman. I performed the act of "Oh, can you keep the door open for me" and all went well. Then I made the classic mistake of pushing the 11th-floor button when she pushed the 10th-floor button. "Oh, you are my top neighbor" she said. "No, not really" I had to admit then, "I've only come to take a picture of the view". She didn't really trust me, but probably didn't dare to tell me to get out immediately.
