| We spent two days docked in Venice. Unfortunately, I caught a 24 hr stomach bug on the boat and spent the second of the 2 days in bed, but we enjoyed the first day to the fullest and saw everything we wanted to see, to include the islands of Murano & Burano. Each island is famous for different things; Murano is the more famous of the two and is well known for it's glass - Murano glass. Venice is famous for "Venetian glass" but Murano is really famous for the craftsmen who spend years and years perfecting thei craft - it is amazing to watch them blow and mold the glass into a work of art! Burano is famous in its own right for lace-making. We watched an elderly woman painstakenly making every stitch, section by section. It is normal for lace to take them weeks/months/ even a year to complete! Another notable things about Burano is the brightly colored houses & shops. Venice is comprised of many little islands and hundreds of canals that go through the city. They use the canals as roads since cars are not allowed in the city. Instead, they have boats called "water-taxis." The houses look like they are built out of the water, when they areactually built on solid earth and reinforced below the waterline. |
