Maharashtra Tahasildar (Recruitment) Rules-1989

In exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to article 309 of the Constitution of India and in supersession of all existing rules, orders or instruments made in this behalf, the Governor of Maharashtra is hereby pleased to make the following rules regulating recruitment to the post of Tahasildar in Class-II, namely:-

  1. (1) These rules may be called the Maharashtra Tahasildar (Recruitment) Rules-1989.
    (2) They shall be deemed to have come into force on and from 17th March 1982.
  2. In these rules, unless the context requires otherwise:-

a. "Commission" means the Maharashtra Public Service Commission.

  1. "Degree" means a Degree of a Statutory University.
  2. "Government" means the Government of Maharashtra.
  1. The Tahasildars' cadre shall be a Divisional cadre and the officers appointed in that cadre may be posted, transferred or deputed to any part of the division concerned.
  2. Appointment to the post of Tahasildar shall be made either:
  1. by promotion of a suitable person on the basis of seniority subject to fitness from amongst the persons holding the post of Naib Tahasildar having not less than three years service in Class-III service in the A.Ks. and N.Ts. cadre taken together. Or
  2. by nomination on the basis of the results of the competitive examination held by the Commission in accordance with the rules prescribed for Competitive Examination for recruitment to the post of Tahasildars from amongst candidates, who:-
    1. are not less than 19 years and more than 28 years of age;
    2. possess a Bachelor's degree of a statutory University or any other qualification declared by Government to be equivalent thereto and ;
    3. possess adequate knowledge of Marathi;


Provided that, the appointment by nomination shall be made in such manner as to ensure that the total number of directly Tahasildars in the cadre of Tahasildars shall not, at any time, be less than 25 per cent and not more than 33 per cent of the total number of permanent posts in that cadre.

  1. The candidate appointed to the posts by nomination shall be on probation for a period of two years, during which period he shall undergo such training and pass such departmental examination(s) as may be prescribed by Government in that behalf:

  2. Provided that, Government may, from time to time, extend the probationary period of a probationer who has not passed such examination(s) or has not completed the probationary period to the satisfaction of the Government, for such further period not exceeding one year in the aggregate as it deems fit and after this limit is reached, either the probationary period shall be terminated or

    the services of the probationer shall be dispensed with.

  3. A person appointed to the post , whether by promotion or by nomination shall be required to pass the examination in Hindi and Marathi according to the rules made in that behalf, unless he has already passed, or has been exempted from passing, those examination.
