The Bands
Kissinger
In the crowded, competitive waters of the Austin music scene, the four-piece pop-rock practitioners known as Kissinger are steadily powering to the top. Their album 'Charm' was produced and unflaggingly championed by indie-rock studio sultan John Croslin (Spoon, Sixteen Deluxe, Beulah, Guided By Voices). Their singles 'Consider Bridgette' and 'Gold Rush' have been all over the local airwaves. The fellows were even named Best New Band of 2000 by the city's arbiters of taste, The Austin American-Statesman and the alt-weekly Austin Chronicle. Hell, they even chalked up wins in multiple categories at that year's Austin Music Awards, the closest thing the Southwest has to GRAMMY awards. So why are they still unsigned? Fear, probably. As self-styled pirates of power pop, these jolly lads put on a live show that's not known for restraint or decorum. Whether harmonizing on the ridiculously catchy chorus of 'Urbia' or slashing through the Kiss-like rocker 'Ascetic,' they don't hold back. Spit flies. Sweat pours. Bandmates stumble, swagger, collide and fall down. Then they play 'Rock and Roll A**hole' and someone's on the phone to Tipper Gore. But like a Charms Blowpop, under their hard shell they have a bubblegum center. Beneath all those wild licks, you can see it shining through. -- Seth Sherwood
