Date of Birth: 11/08/1964 Skateboarding Since: 1976 Skated for Independent: From 1984 to 1993 Sponsors: Powell, Bones Wheels, Bones bearings, Vans, Sessions, Dragon, Krux, RDS, Pro Tec There are few professional skaters like Steve Caballero. From his beginnings as a skatepark local at Campbell and Winchester to his legendary status amongst his fans and peers, one thing that remains constant is his passion for the culture, lifestyle and sport of skateboarding. The other, is his loyalty to his first board sponsor which has endured over twenty years since he entered his first pro contest. Steves skating abilities and persona became an important contribution to the overall ideology of the Independent team through the 80s. As a part of the Bones Brigade he managed to keep his plate full while at the height of his career. He played music in several punk and alternative rock bands (The Faction, Odd Man Out, Shovelhead, Soda), wrenched on motorcycles, and made skate zines too. While on a summer road trip he and Lance Mountain designed the conceptual elements for Independents Stage V truck out of clay. In 1989 he assisted in the design of his signature skate shoe through Vans the Cab. Steve has always been involved and expressive in something other than his skating. In 1993 Steve parted ways with Independent as the skate industry became gripped in the recession. Nonetheless, the San Jose native continued to progress in his skate career and focused his energy towards street skating to round out his solid ramp and transition abilities. Today Steve continues to tour and compete as a veteran pro, enjoys riding his moto cross bikes and keeps everything in balance in raising his daughter Kayla. He is a legend in every sense. |
