i know danny chai talked about this in his short thoughts today, but i thought i would throw in my two cents as well. i think out of the grey's new cd, "6.1," is quite good. i just got it today, and was able to listen to it. i must agree with danny that it is not a boring cd, but quite lively and fresh-sounding. i was pleased by what i heard. im so glad that it's not the polished but restrained and boring pop that defined "gravity" and "diamond days." though i only listened to 6.1 three times, it's already growing on me. wonderful. also, the live cd is great as well. scott dente plays a mean guitar. good stuff. i also want to compliment, as danny did, the producer. monroe jones did start off with chris rice's first cd, but he has also worked with third day ("time"), ginny owens("without condition"), and caedmon's call("long line of leavers"), to name a few others. and their results have been excellent. of course the musicians themselves are talented, but i dont think it's coincidence that he is the producer of those albums.

last friday, i purchased kevin max's cd, titled "stereotype be." kevin max is one in the trio of dc talk. he's not the black guy, and he's not the rapper (theyre not the same person, believe it or not). oh, a side note. just because he came out with a solo cd (just like the other 2 guys in dc talk did), does not mean that they are breaking up, in case you care. he is quite a character though. he has a reputation for being the bad-boy of christian music (as bad boy as that can be). i think he has this reputation cuz he's kinda out there. he writes poetry. he dresses weird. he acts weird. and his cd reflects that. but not in a bad way by any means. first of all, he has a very distinct voice. it's quite good as well. im not sure how to describe it...it's piercing but flexible, i guess. that sounds lame. i know. but anyway, it's very distinct. like michael jackson or bono's voice. the cd is also very different from the usual pop/rock stuff that's out there. he incorporates a middle-eastern sound on a few songs, and throws in some horns on others (in a beatles-sort of way). it all works, in my opinion. on top of that are lyrics that are not blatant. sometimes it's clear that he's talking about God, other times it's about a girl, and sometimes, i have no idea what. it's kinda frustrating, but good as well, because i have to read into the lyrics. good stuff, all in all.
