| Several circumstantial leads connect Catharine Margaret as a daughter of Andrew FETZER. -- We know that the FETZERs and WALKERs came to Centre County at approximately the same time, and intermarried. -- The Andrew WALKER farm has also been called the "FETZER farm." -- In the cemetery at Milesburg we find the stone for Catharine Margaret WALKER, with a death date and age which compute to a birthdate of 7 Jan 1775. -- In the records of the Jordan Reformed Church in South Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., PA, we find Catharine Margaret FETZER, daughter of Andrew and Magdalena (DOTTER) FETZER, born 5 Jan 1775 (per John Humphries' book of early Lehigh County, PA births). -- In the same family as this child, Catharine Margaret, is a younger sister, Eva Margaret FETZER, born 24 Dec 1780, who later (ca. 1798) became the wife of Enoch HEATON b. ca. 1773, PA, d. 23 Feb 1858, m. ca 1798 and settled in Boggs Township, Centre County, PA and may even be buried on the cemetery on the Andrew WALKER farm. -- Also in this family is a child, George Michael FETZER, born 18 Oct 1778, died 15 Apr 1848, and is buried in the Milesburg Cemetery, the same cemetery where Catharine Margaret is buried. -- In John Blair Linn's History of Centre and Clinton Counties, PA (1883), page 263, it states: "Andrew Fetzer settled near Walker [this is Andrew Walker, mentioned in the preceding paragraph], and was possessed of enough land at his death to leave each of his children one hundred acres." I checked Centre County Estate files, and found Andrew FETZER. He died in 1804; however, no record of his children were contained within the estate. However, I believe that the evidence is strong enough that the Andrew FETZER who died in Boggs Township in 1804 is the same as the Andrew FETZER who fathered children in Lehigh County in the 1700s, since two of the children definitely came to Centre County (Eva Margaret and George Michael) and in the same cemetery is a Catharine Margaret whose birthdate from her grave is only two days' different from that in the church records, and who lived next door to the FETZERs, according to the county history. I found in Linn's that "Widow FETZLER" was still living in Boggs Township in 1815. That is the last info I have on Magdalena (DOTTER) FETZER. Michael FETZLER and Andrew FETZER (single), both children of Andrew Sr., are assessed in Boggs in 1815 as well. To me, this info proves that Catharine Margaret FETZER later became the wife of Andrew WALKER. Another thing I don't know if all you WALKER researchers caught: In the paragraph about Andrew WALKER on page 263 of Linn's History it states, and I quote, "Andrew WALKER died on the old farm in 1857, at the reputed age of ninety-five. That fall died also his lifelong friend Samuel WATKINS, who was then said to be over a hundred years old." Now, Andrew WALKER was only 88 years old at the time of his death; from other sources I have that Samuel WATKINS was in the vicinity of 91 years of age at his death in November 1857. I wonder, however, if they were "lifelong friends" as the article states, that we couldn't find the origin of Andrew by tracing Samuel? If they were truly lifelong friends they would have known one another before either were in Centre County. Perhaps they came together? According to my notes, Samuel WATKINS had bought land in Howard Township at the head of Bullits Run on 28 Apr 1810 from David and Margaret TIPTON. (Centre Co., PA Deeds C-375). The deed states that Samuel was already of Howard Township. He must have lived here for a while before buying land, so he certainly could have come here with Andrew WALKER -- maybe even lived with him or rented from him a while -- until he bought his own piece of land in 1810. Just a thought to mull over. Justin |
