Americans

These are the things that made them happy,
The illusions they pasted in front of the
Furious sunlight: think about it:
A happy-face icon, a greeting card,
A young man in a bright red action outfit
With slanted-to-the-side racing labels,

This made them happy! A woman with
High-bundled, permed hair . . .
A monster with huge stalactite teeth!

These things were sufficient, these things
Entertained them.

They believed in these things, they believed
In Clint Eastwoods craggy
Jaw.

They believed, they wanted their Presidents
To be Fatherly.

And you think they will not destroy themselves? All the same,
Imagine the innocence, the innocent and profound
Vulnerability

Of minds that would be entranced by all these things.
