protecting our abstractions
 2001 by john e
how the edifice stood so long
is an issue. how sweet lives lived
through corridors and shafts
is an issue. how unprotected
is greatness. how true
to be unsure.
all exist in air.
let days crumble, bodies scream.
no one to hold, i plummet
through memory, through your arms,
separate from your life,
from my love for you.
i fly into future,
nothing to do with
your breath, the trembling,
the rubble, the blame.
i wanted to be
before you, beside you,
atop you once more.
the one way i knew to be.
it's not death.
goodbye. we go on,
watching a new protection
attempted in our sooty air.
