To the Arizonan Outback!

Oh, Okay, it wasn't that rural. It was around the early part of May 1999. I had just turned one years old about a week earlier. Traveling from Los Angeles to Arizona is no piece of cake for a one-year old. Instead of driving there, which would have taken 8 hours, like some others in my party decided to, I took an airplane. I flew on United and I don't remember how long it took to get there (I have a short memory and a short attention span) but when we got there, it was in the afternoon and boy, was it hot! The function was at the University of Arizona in Tucson and we stayed at a nice hotel nearby. It was smaller than the hotel the other attendees were staying at (theirs was the Hilton or something like that), but it was nice and resort-like. I arrived there on Wednesday and left on Sunday. Getting home was an adventure in itself!

The flight to Tucson was a direct flight- straight from LAX to Tucson. Coming back, however, we had to first fly to Phoenix, Arizona and then change planes to get to LAX. First of all, our plane was scheduled to leave at 7:15am. When I woke up, the clock said 6 am. I almost cried! We got to the airport a little afer 7 am. I thought we'd never make it onto the plane. It turned out that the digital clock at the hotel was one hour ahead and that it was only 6 am. (I had a regular watch, but how many one-year olds do you know that can tell time?)

Then we found out that our flight from Tucson to Phoenix was cancelled. It was some big college football and graduation weekend and all other flights from Tucson to Phoenix were booked solid. Luckily, one of my traveling partners had rented a car in Tucson and we decided to drive to Phoenix. We had a little more than 2 hours until the flight left Phoenix and it would take us 2 hours to get from Tucson to Phoenix. The lady at the United counter doubted we could make it in time, but we were determined. I slept for most of the car ride- after all, desert highways are not that interesting.

Luckily, we made it in time! The lady at the United counter at the Phoenix airport was very impressed with our story. I was very, very happy to be home- I'm not a big fan of hot weather and believe me, it wasn't a pretty sight.

Peek-a-boo!
